A mechanical seal assembly for creating a sealing relationship between a housing and a shaft which is rotatable relative thereto. The seal assembly includes first and second coaxially aligned and axially adjacent seal rings disposed in an encircling relationship to the shaft and having axially adjacent and opposed flat seal faces for creating an annular sealing region therebetween. The seal assembly further includes a self-contained grease supply device for supplying a continuous flow of grease to a seal chamber at a substantially steady or uniform flow rate and a grease discharge device for pressurizing the grease and permitting a flow of excess grease therethrough. The pressurized grease is positioned adjacent the seal rings to provide a self-regulating supply of grease which is drawn into the sealing region during upset conditions of the seal.

Grease seal

A mechanical seal assembly for creating a sealing relationship between a housing and a shaft which is rotatable relative thereto. The seal assembly includes first and second coaxially aligned and axially adjacent seal rings disposed in an encircling relationship to the shaft and having axially adjacent and opposed flat seal faces for creating an annular sealing region therebetween. The first and second seal rings are respectively nonrotatably coupled to the housing and the shaft. A chamber is defined adjacent one seal ring and is in communication with a controlled pressurized fluid source which supplies a fluid to the chamber. The chamber opens toward a rear surface of the seal ring to apply a closing force to the seal ring to axially move the seal ring toward the opposing seal ring. The controlled pressurized fluid source is operatively connected to an operating condition sensor, preferably a temperature differential sensing arrangement, which detects the condition of a fluid film between the sealing faces and adjusts the pressure on the first seal ring to vary the gap condition.

A soot blower assembly having a horizontally elongate steam supply tube disposed in cantilevered relationship and having a steam discharge opening at the free end, and a horizontally elongate steam discharge lance telescoped axially over the supply tube. The lance has a rear support hub which exteriorly surrounds the steam supply tube, and a seal-bearing arrangement is mounted within the hub for cooperation with the steam supply tube to permit the lance to move both axially and rotatably relative to the steam supply tube. The seal-bearing arrangement includes an axially elongate bearing sleeve which is mounted on the hub and has an inner bearing surface for rotative bearing engagement with the steam tube. This bearing sleeve is preferably constructed of bronze of similar bearing material, and is axially split to compensate for temperature-induced variations. A lip seal assembly cooperates between the steam supply tube and the hub axially rearwardly of the bearing sleeve for creating a sealed engagement with the periphery of the steam supply tube.

Soot blower seal-bearing arrangement

A bearing protector employing a stator and a rotor defining a labyrinth therebetween and disposed for sealing cooperation between a housing and a rotatable shaft. The concentrically fit within one another due to relative axial movement therebetween, each is constructed as an integral continuous one-piece ring. The stator and rotor are axially secured in an assembled condition by a one-piece snap ring carried by the stator and which resiliently distorts to pass axially over the rotor and then resiliently snaps inwardly into a groove in the rotor so as to become fixed to and rotate with the rotor. This snap ring projects outwardly into a radially enlarged annular collecting chamber formed in the stator and acts, when the rotor rotates, as a slinger ring so that contaminates which enter into the labyrinth from the outside come into contact with the slinger ring and are thrown outwardly to the bottom of the collecting chamber for discharge through a drain.

A sealing device employing interfitting relatively rotatable rings, namely a stator and a rotor disposed for cooperation between a housing and a rotatable shaft. The stator is nonrotatably and sealingly engaged within an opening formed in the housing. An elastomeric O-ring maintains a seal between the stator and housing. The rotor snugly surrounds and is nonrotatably carried with the shaft and is provided with elastomeric seal ring therebetween to prevent leakage along the shaft. The stator closely externally surrounds the rotor to define a complex pathway therebetween which inhibits flow of liquids or contaminants in either direction therethrough. This pathway includes a pair of annular collecting chambers disposed in axially spaced relationship, whereby the outer chamber collects and discharges to the environment any contaminants which enter from the environment, and the inner chamber collects and discharges back to the reservoir any lubricant or fluid which enters into the pathway from its inner end.

Labyrinth bearing protector seal

A mechanical seal assembly provided with an annular seal cavity which encircles the seal parts. A coolant circulation tube (i.e., an exit tube) projects through the housing into the seal cavity and is provided with a window-shaped opening in the sidewall thereof opposing the direction of coolant circulation. The lower end of the tube is preferably closed off by a bottom wall which is inclined outwardly away from the rotating seal parts in the direction of fluid circulation. This bottom wall has a lower edge defining the lower edge of the window and disposed closely adjacent the periphery of the rotating seal parts. The substantial quantity of circulating coolant, and the substantial velocity head thereof, passes through the window into the inner end of the tube so that the velocity head is converted into a significant static pressure head, whereupon the liquid is pumped radially outwardly of the tube through a closed circuit having a heat exchanger associated therewith. This circuit at its other end connects to an inlet hole which communicates with the seal cavity at a location which is circumferentially spaced from the tube.

Mechanical seal assembly with coolant circulation tube

A bearing isolator assembly particularly for use in a roll mill for isolating the environment from the support shaft bearing. A first isolator ring is non-rotatably mounted on the shaft and is concentric with and rotatable relative to a pair of fixed isolator rings which concentrically surround the shaft and are fixed to a support housing. These isolator rings defines therebetween a narrow clearance space which defines a tortuous path which initially includes a U-shaped labyrinth, one end of which communicates with the environment, and the other end of which communicates with an enlarged annular collection chamber which has a drain port associated therewith. This collection chamber is behind a dam associated with the rotatable isolator ring, and the downstream side of the dam is positioned closely adjacent a radial wall on the fixed isolator ring to define a narrow passage therebetween. This narrow passage, and the rotation of the dam, exerts sufficient centrifugal force to prevent the fluid from flowing radially inwardly so that the fluid is returned to the collection chamber.
