A current source inverter power supply for an ozone generator which results in improved efficiency and reliability in operation of such generators has an AC/DC converter coupled through a large inductance to a DC/AC inverter that, in turn, is coupled at its output to the primary of a high voltage transformer. Such transformer has an air gap in its core to supply the electrical characteristics necessary for resonance with the load which is capacitive in nature. Thyristors in the inverter are naturally commutated so the switching frequency is close to, but slightly above, the natural resonant frequency of the inverter/transformer/ozone generator circuit.

Ozone generation methods

A control system for an industrial inverting type power supply is disclosed which provides for both operational control and a diagnostic capability for the power supply. The operational control aspects includes measuring and displaying a plurality of operational signals from within the power supply, and for providing several automatic modes of operation for the power supply. The diagnostic aspects of the control system include measuring and displaying a plurality of diagnostic values, particularly the measurement of several waveform characteristic values of the switching waveform of the power supply. Other diagnostic capabilities include a set of remote inputs, each of which, when activated, triggers an entry into a history table, thereby maintaining a record of remote input activations. Each remote input may also be configured with a descriptive message to be displayed on an operator display and a code which specifies the action that is to be taken by the control system when that remote input is activated. A short detection circuit is also included which operates when the power supply is stopped to test the switching elements of the power supply for shorts.

Power supply controller

A power supply system generates a.c. power which is applied through a high voltage transformer to the electrodes of a treater. It includes a converter circuit which transforms a.c. electric power to d.c. power and an inverter which transforms the d.c. power to a.c. power. A feedback circuit senses the power delivered to the treater and separate control of both inverter frequency and output voltage is employed to prevent arc-over during the treatment process. The power supply system is particularly responsive to sudden changes in the operating conditions, and this enables treatment of relatively thin materials on a bare metal roller.
