Methods and apparatus to search datasets are disclosed. An example disclosed method includes receiving a search request having at least two criteria and assigning the criteria to a first group according to a logical relationship between the criteria. The example method further includes determining which of the criteria in the first group is satisfied by a least amount of records in a database based on a plurality of counts, the counts respectively indicative of a number of corresponding records in the database satisfying a respective one of criteria exhibited by the database, and identifying a reduced set of records in the database to be searched, the reduced set of records corresponding to the first or second criteria that is satisfied by the least amount of records in the database, and reducing a search time associated with the search request by searching the reduced set of records from the database.

An example disclosed apparatus includes a grouper to reference statistics associated with a database to identify which criterion of a group of logically related criteria of a search request satisfies fewer ones of records in the database, an identifier to select the identified criterion of the group of logically related criteria as a driving criterion for the group of logically related criteria, a reduced set generator to form a subset of the records of the database based on the driving criterion, and an analyzer to reduce a search time associated with the search request by searching the subset of the records for a non-driving criterion of the group of logically related criteria.

An example disclosed apparatus includes a count generator to generate a plurality of counts, the counts respectively indicative of a number of corresponding records in a database satisfying a respective one of a plurality of criteria present in the database; a grouper to assign first and second criteria of a search request to a first group according to a logical relationship between the first and second criteria; an identifier to determine, via the plurality of counts, which of the first and second criteria in the first group is satisfied by a least amount of records in the database; and a reduced set generator to form a reduced set of records to be searched based on the determined one of the first and second criteria satisfying the least amount of records in the database.

Example methods include in response to a search request including first and second logically related criteria, determining a first number of records in a database satisfying the first criterion and a second number of records in the database satisfying the second criterion; when the first number is less than the second number, selecting the first criterion as a basis for generating a subset of the records of the database; when the second number is less than the first number, selecting the second criterion as the basis for the identification of the subset of the records of the database; and searching the subset of the records.

A market research database includes first and second information sets. The first information set contains first market research information, and the second information set contains second market research information. The market research database also includes a set of dynamic rules. At least one rule of the set of dynamic rules is arranged to respond to first data being entered into the first information set by entering second, different data into the second information set.

A market research database includes industry code information containing industry codes (such as UPCs), naked product information containing information about naked products, package information containing information about packages, and product definition information linking naked product information, package information, and industry codes. Accordingly, the storage of information in the database is not dependent upon UPCs or other industry codes, making access to product related information difficult. The use of naked product information, together with the way of identifying products, facilitate a third normal form database.

A market research database contains a plurality of sets of product related information. Each set of product related information relates to a corresponding market aspect of products. For example, a set may relate to packages in which products are contained, another set may relate to brand names of products, still another set may relate to business enterprises which package, distribute, or market products, and so on. Each set includes a current layer of product related information, wherein the current layer of product related information is in current time. The product related information in the current layer of each set of product related information includes a control designator. The control designator permits direct access to the current layer of product related information substantially exclusive of other product related information.
