A Mie photo sensor is described. A Mie photo sensor is configured to leverage Mie scattering to implement a photo sensor having a resonance. The resonance is based on various physical and material properties of the Mie photo sensor. In an example, a Mie photo sensor includes a layer of semiconductor material with one or more mesas. Each mesa of semiconductor material may include a scattering center. The scattering center is formed by the semiconductor material of the mesa being at least partially surround by a material with a different refractive index than the semiconductor material. The abutting refractive index materials create an interface that forms a scattering center and localizes the generation of free carriers during Mie resonance. One or more electrical contacts may be made to the mesa to measure the electrical properties of the mesa.

Methods and apparatus for analyzing surface properties of particles are provided. A method for analyzing the surface properties of the particle includes a associating a first particle with a first capture zone having a specific binding affinity for a first chemical species, applying an optical force to the first particle, sensing a response of the first particle to the optical force, and using the sensed response to determine the presence, absence or quantity of the first chemical species on the first particle surface. This process may be repeated in parallel to test multiple particles. In addition to directly testing the surface properties of the particles, the method can be used in direct, indirect and competitive assays to determine the presence, absence or quantity of free or immobilized analytes. A fluidic cartridge with capture zones having avidities that are tuned for the use of optical forces is provided. A software routine for performing the method is also provided.

The present invention employs a beam steering apparatus to isolate valuable cells from other cells, tissues, and contaminants. In one embodiment, the system balances optical trapping against biasing flow to parallelize cell sorting under the flexible control of computer program-directed traps which differentially manipulate cells based on their composition or labels to direct separation.

System and method of sorting materials using holographic laser steering

Our invention relates generally to an optical switch () and an optical router () to rapidly route signals from particular channels () within an optical band by using optical switches () which utilize a controlled whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonance of dielectric microspheres (S, S, S) to optically switch signals. Another invention relates to optical filters which use a WGM resonate structure () to isolate and switch specific optical signals between waveguides (F, F). In other inventions, the filter () is switched 'on/off' by signal loss within a WGM resonate structure () which disrupts the WGM resonance; the filter () isolates and switches a specific wavelength signal from among a group of signals of different wavelengths; and is switched 'off' by adjusting the index of refraction of the resonate structure to become substantially similar to the index of refraction of the surrounding medium.

At least one characteristic of the material is selected; and a laser beam having a selected wavelength corresponding to the at least one selected characteristic of the material is generated. Values of the DOE are calculated corresponding to the at least one selected characteristic of the material. The beam and the DOE are modulated to produce a holographic optical trap having properties corresponding to the at least one selected characteristic; the trap is focused to a beam focus or selected spot size; and the beam focus is located near a particle location for trapping the particle therein.
