Methods and apparatus for communicating between surface equipment and downhole equipment. One embodiment of the invention provides a wellhead assembly that allows electrical power and signals to pass into and out of the well during drilling operations, without removing the valve structure above the wellhead. Another embodiment of the invention provides an electromagnetic casing antenna system for two-way communication with downhole tools. Another embodiment of the invention provides an antenna module for a resistivity sub that effectively controls and seals the primary/secondary interface gap.

Apparatus for wellbore communication

A hydraulic sleeve valve is disclosed that comprises a bypass relief system that provides an indication that the valve has reached a predetermined position, such as, for example, the fully opened or fully closed condition. The bypass relief may also provide a valve control fluid circulation function to filter or otherwise manipulate the control fluid. Also disclosed are flow port alignment systems that maintain the valve flow ports in predetermined relationships.

A detonator assembly for use with explosive devices includes a support structure, an exploding foil initiator mounted on the support structure, and a barrel attached to the support structure and adjacent the exploding foil initiator. The support structure may include a flex cable. An explosive is placed in the proximity of the exploding foil initiator.

A perforating apparatus adapted to be disposed in a wellbore includes a plurality of shaped charges, an electrical current carrying conductor, and a plurality of exploding foil or exploding bridgewire initiators disposed, respectively, between the plurality of charges and the current carrying conductor for simultaneously detonating thereby simultaneously detonating all of the plurality of shaped charges of the perforating apparatus in response to a current flowing in the conductor. Each of the shaped charges include a new secondary explosive primer disposed in the apex of the charge for detonating in response to a detonation of the exploding foil or exploding bridgewire initiator. The electrical conductor may include a flat cable having a plurality of such initiators spaced apart at predetermined intervals along the cable and adapted to wrap helically around the perforating apparatus until each of the initiators abut against a shaped charge of the plurality of charges in the perforating apparatus. In an alternate embodiment, the electrical current carrying conductor may include a flat sheet having a specific length and width and including a plurality of such initiators. The flat sheet is adapted to wrap around the entire circumference of the perforating apparatus until each of the initiators in the sheet abut against a shaped charge of the plurality of charges in the perforating apparatus. The current in the conductor may originate from a compressed magnetic flux (CMF) current pulse generator or from a charging capacitor of a conventional system including one or more charging capacitors and associated discharge switches. When the perforating apparatus includes a first and second perforator separated by an adaptor, the adaptor includes a pressure bulkhead adapted to seal the first perforator from the second perforator, an explosive disposed in contact against one side of the bulkhead and a piezoelectric ceramic disposed in contact against the other side of the bulkhead.

An exploding foil bubble activated detonator, adapted for use in a perforating gun, includes an exploding foil, the exploding foil including as neck section which vaporizes when a current of sufficient magnitude and duration flows therethrough, a layer of polyimide material deposited over said foil, and a spacer layer deposited over said layer of polyimide material, the spacer layer including a guiding hole disposed directly over the neck section of the foil. When the current flows through the neck section of the foil, a turbulence is caused to occur directly above the neck section. This turbulence causes a portion of the polyimide material to expand to form a bubble. The bubble is shaped and sized by the guiding hole in the spacer layer which is disposed directly over the neck section of the foil. The shaped and sized bubble in the polyimide material impacts an explosive thereby detonating the explosive. A selective gun firing system may include the bubble activated detonator and functions to allow an operator to selectively fire, in a predetermined sequence, a plurality of perforators in the perforating gun, such as from bottom gun to top gun. A hall effect sensor disposed in a well truck is connected to a wireline to which the perforating gun is connected and senses a current in the wireline. A novel safety barrier is inserted into a hole in a barrel of a prior art exploding foil initiator (EFI) detonator for blocking a flying plate flying in the hole and thereby preventing accidental detonations of the EFI detonator.
