An underwater survey system where the existence of a large number of multiplex signals in conjunction with a relatively poor frequency response over a long tow cable, results in a situation where the transmission of a normal 30 frames per second TV picture is impossible. The invention describes a method of transmitting a reduced bandwidth TV system where the signals are modulated on a carrier and the lower sideband used. The large signal loss at the upper frequency is compensated by equalizers, which can result in objectionable interference, when the vehicle is close to the receiving end. A remotely controlled carrier is used to minimize this interference.

TV Transmission system for long tow cables

The position of a carrier from a navigational reference generates X,Y coordinate navigation signals which are scaled as distance along a TV line of a TV display and a line number in the frame of the TV picture. A continual updated track of a moving vehicle is therefore displayed on a TV monitor, and if a video disc is used, can be recalled from the non-volatile memory for later replay.

Navigational display system

Docking sonar uses first and second fan-shaped beams sequentially scanning a target zone in mutually perpendicular directions. Target returns from one beam scan are compared with target returns from the other beam scan and the results are placed into a storage medium such as a video disc and then displayed on a conventional TV monitor, with brightness of the target on the display being an indication of target range.

Dual beam sonar display system

The beam signals of a multibeam sidelooking sonar system are initially time compressed in a first, relatively low speed, logic section and thereafter transferred to a relatively higher speed logic section for placement onto a video disc. The signals from the video disc are presented to a TV display with the information being portrayed as a moving window. The scan conversion operation may be modified to provide a substantially correct picture geometric format as the vehicle carrying the sidelooking sonar apparatus varies its velocity.

Multibeam sidelooking sonar display system

An underwater floodlit scene is viewed by a TV camera. The first few active TV lines in the scan format, indicative of the illuminated field where backscatter is a minimum, are stored on a video disk. As the apparatus travels over a target area to be viewed, subsequent portions of the TV video signal from the minimum backscatter area are subsequently stored on the disk. The stored signals are then displayed on a TV monitor as a moving window display. The number of active TV lines gated for storage on the disk may be made proportional to the carrier vehicle speed, altitude and camera viewing angle, or field of view.
