A tool for testing a magnetic disk for use in a magnetic disk drive. The tool detects surface defects or asperities by detecting a change in electrical resistance corresponding to a temperature change in a thermally sensitive layer. The apparatus includes a slider body having a thermally insulating layer formed on an air bearing surface of the slider body and a thermal sensor layer formed on the thermally insulating layer. The thermally insulating layer prevents thermal heat spikes in the thermal sensor layer (such as resulting from contact with an asperity) from dissipating quickly into the slider body itself. The thermal sensor layer is a material that exhibits a change in electrical resistance in response to a change in temperature and is preferably a PTC thermistor material which exhibits a large change in electrical resistance when a transition temperature has been reached.

One-sided magnetic media for a hard disk drive. Methods are implemented to create a magnetic media with only one surface capable of recording data. The second surface is a non-data recording side of the media and is constructed so that it does not interfere with the recording properties of the recording side or the structural usefulness of the media. Additionally, the second surface can be a low quality surface capable of limited magnetic recording.

One magnetic sided media for low cost and low capacity applications

Magnetic recording media having a protective carbon overcoat adapted to protect the magnetic recording layer from surface contact events and corrosion. The carbon overcoat includes at least two layers. A first layer is adapted to protect the magnetic recording layer from surface contact events and corrosion. The second layer is disposed on the first layer and is adapted to enhance the bonding of a lubricant to the carbon overcoat and to minimize head degradation. The magnetic recording media of the present invention advantageously enables the use of thin carbon overcoats, enhancing areal density, while maintaining good tribological properties.

The present invention is directed to a disk for information storage. The disk, in one embodiment, comprises a substrate , antiferromagnetically exchange coupled first and second ferromagnetic films and , a spacer film , and at least one buffer film located between the first and second ferromagnetic films. One or more of the following statements is true with respect to the buffer film : (i) the buffer film is paramagnetic; (ii) the buffer film is superparamagnetic at temperatures of about 50&deg; C. or less; and (iii) a lattice mismatch between the buffer film and at least one of the first and second ferromagnetic films and in contact with the buffer film is about 5% or less.

Intermediate layer for antiferromagnetically exchange coupled media

The coercivity of a magnetic recording medium such as a magnetic disk is determined by providing at least two magnetic layers in the recording medium with the relative thicknesses of the two magnetic layers determining coercivity without the need for changing substrate temperature, underlayer thickness or substrate biasing during manufacture. Each magnetic layer is a cobalt alloy of different composition and intrinsic magnetic properties. Importantly, the coercivity can be modified without adversely affecting remanence or squareness of the hysteresis transition region for the recording medium.

The slotted peep of this invention is a device that eliminates the detrimental effects of diffracted light from its aperture. Diffraction causes light to bend toward and perpendicular to an object's edge. In a current peep's aperture diffracted light is neither controlled nor eliminated. Diffracted light creates several shortcomings in current peeps which impair their accuracy and utility. The current aperture must be oversized to allow space for the diffracted light. The visual size and shape of the current aperture will vary with changes in the light diffraction. Under low light conditions, enough light may be diffracted within the current peep aperture that a user may not be able to see through the peep. A slotted peep is designed to eliminate detrimental effects of diffracted light from its aperture. By surrounding an open space with the open ends of slots, a space is defined that has virtually no physical edges. A slot of the slotted peep confines diffracted light within the slot. &ldquo;(FIG. )&rdquo; shows slotted peep,&ldquo;( )&rdquo;. What a user looking through the slotted peep would see is, &ldquo;( )&rdquo;. Light diffracted perpendicular to the edges of the slots darkens the slots. Since light is diffracted parallel to the preimeter of the sloted peep's aperture, diffraction will have no effect on the aperture. The slotted peep's aperture will virtually free of diffracted light. The slotted peep will not have the aforementioned shortcomings of current peeps. The slotted peep should be made in a rigid material. There is a need for a peep that is designed to eliminate the detrimental effects of diffracted light from its aperture.
