Improved low pressure molding compositions are disclosed which comprise an unsaturated thermosetting resin, an olefinically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable with the thermosetting resin, a viscosity reducing additive, a thermoplastic additive and a thickener comprising one or more alkaline earth metal oxides or hydroxides which can provide the molding compositions with viscosities of less than 25 MMcps after aging.

Low pressure molding compositions

Molding compositions comprising certain epoxy compounds, at least one antioxidant, an unsaturated thermosetting resin and an olefinically unsaturated monomer are disclosed. The disclosed compositions can provide enhanced yellowing resistance to articles molded from the compositions, particularly when the molding compositions contain white pigment. Processes from molding articles having enhanced yellowing resistance are also disclosed.

Polyurethanes having utility, for example, as low profile additives, in polyester-based molding compositions, a method of preparing polyester-based molding compositions containing such polyurethane low profile additives and thermoset articles made with the method are disclosed. The disclosed polyurethane low profile additives can enhance the pigmentability of molded articles comprising the low profile additives. The low profile additives comprise the reaction product of a hydroxyl-terminated prepolymer and an anhydride such as a dicarboxylic acid anhydride, preferably reacted in the presence of a catalyst comprising an amine having from about 4 to 20 carbon atoms.

A molding composition is provided which, through the use of a lactone monomer, improves the surface characteristics of the molded composite. In particular, the use of .epsilon.-caprolactone (oxepane-2-one) provides a smoother surface and enhanced dimensional stability.

Articles manufactured by bonding two or more shaped fiber reinforced polymeric substrates together can be made by an improved process comprising: applying a self-crosslinking acrylic polymer latex primer to the bonding surface of each of said substrates and allowing said primer to dry, applying an epoxy adhesive, in an amount sufficient to effect adhesion, to the bonding surfaces thus primed, and contacting the bonding surfaces thus primed and epoxied with one another, under conditions sufficient to cure the epoxy, to achieve bonding.

Polyester molding compositions

There is disclosed thickened, low shrinkage polyester molding compositions having improved pigmentation. The improved pigmentation in thickenable polyester molding compositions containing a carboxylated vinyl ester polymer low profile additive is achieved either by incorporating a surfactant in the composition, by using as the low profile additive a vinyl acetate/maleic acid copolymer, or by a combination of the two methods.

There is disclosed thickened, low shrinkage polyester molding compositions having improved pigmentation. The improved pigmentation in thickenable polyester molding compositions is achieved by using as the low profile additive a vinyl acetate/maleic acid copolymer, and optionally incorporating a surfactant in the composition.

The addition of a select group of crosslinkable vinyl monomers to low shrinking polyester molding compositions containing unsaturated polyesters results in moldings with improved surface characteristics.

Glass-reinforced polyester molding compositions when mixed with lactone polymers and vinyl chloride polymers as additives afford molding compounds with greater shrinkage control and molded parts with smoother surfaces.

The present invention provides particular phenol/formaldehyde resoles which are especially useful as foamable resins, and further provides cellular phenolic products having physical properties which are especially attractive for end-use application as construction foam. The resoles are characterized by a particular relationship between their viscosity and water content, expressed as the area bounded by certain points on a plot of resole viscosity on a logarithmic scale, as a function of water content of the resole, the particular area depending upon the mole ratio of formaldehyde-to-phenol at which the resole has been condensed. It has been found that phenol-formaldehyde resoles having the defined viscosity/water relationship are capable of providing phenolic foam having acceptable foam processability, a foam density from about 1.90 to about 3.70 pounds per cubic foot and, within this foam density range, a good balance of friability resistance and compressive strength, that is, a friability of less than 35 percent weight loss and a compressive strength of at least 20 pounds per square inch. Preferred resoles within the invention are foamable to phenolic foam having a reduced tendency to punk as well as the aforementioned desirable combination of foam processability and mechanical properties.
