Submicron sized particles of poly(methyl methacrylate) are prepared by a surfactant-free semi-continuous emulsion polymerization process that involves (i) preparing an aqueous phase containing a free radical initiator in water by heating and stirring, (ii) preparing a monomer composition containing at least 80% by weight methyl methacrylate and 1 to 10% by weight of a crosslinking agent, (iii) adding the monomer composition to the aqueous phase to initiate emulsion polymerization of the monomer composition, the adding being done at a rate such that from 0.05% to 5% by weight of the total weight of the monomer composition is added per minute, (iv) continuing heating and stirring following completion of the adding of the monomer composition for an amount of time, and (v) drying and recovering the submicron sized particles of poly(methyl methacrylate). The submicron sized particles of poly(methyl methacrylate are used in forming a coating of carrier particles for a two-component developer composition.

A toner for particular use in devices utilizing hybrid scavengeless development includes toner particles of at least one binder, at least one colorant, and optionally one or more additives, the toner exhibiting a charge per particle diameter (Q/D) of from &minus;0.1 to &minus;1.0 fC/&mgr;m with a variation during development of from 0 to 0.25 fC/&mgr;m and the distribution is substantially unimodal and possesses a peak width of less than 0.5 fC/&mgr;m, and the toner has a triboelectric charge of from &minus;25 to &minus;70 &mgr;C/g with a variation during development of from 0 to 15 &mgr;C/g following triboelectric contact with carrier particles. Use of a toner with such properties in a hybrid scavengeless development apparatus enables images to be achieved with properties similar to that achieved in offset lithography.

A fluidized bed jet mill for grinding particulate material including a jetting nozzle comprising: a first hollow cylindrical body with a first diameter, wherein one end of the body is directed towards the center of the jet mill and the other end traverses the wall of the jet mill; and a hollow cylindrical curvilinear body with a diameter which is less than said first diameter, wherein the first end of the curvilinear body is collinear with the long axis of said first hollow cylindrical body, wherein the first end of the curvilinear body is at a point approximately equal to the end of the first hollow cylindrical body, wherein the second end of the curvilinear body passes through an opening in the side wall of said first hollow cylindrical body, and wherein said side wall opening is leak free and resides within the grinding chamber of the fluid bed mill; and wherein the nozzle communicates the gas stream from a high pressure source to the grinding chamber.
