An apparatus for protecting a digital electronic data processor or stored digital data from damage includes a digital data unit comprising a data storage medium, a protective housing having side, top, and bottom walls defining a closed compartment which contains the digital data unit to shield the digital data therein from environmental damage. Active and passive protection from overheating and data encryption provides further data protection. The housing has at least one access port for supplying electrical power or for information transfer to or from the data unit therein. The port is sealed to prevent the introduction of environmental substances into the housing in the event of potential damage from an environmental disaster or other cause. The invention thus makes possible the safe storage of digital information in a computer data storage system which therefore has substantially increased capacity to survive disasters such as fires, floods, earthquakes, and theft, as well as more common computer problems such as disk drive failures. The invention can employ multiple computer network data access mechanisms that store digital data, including but not limited to Microsoft Windows File Sharing, Common Internet File Systems (CIFS), Network File Systems (NFS), Novell Netware File Systems, iSCSI, Storage Area Network Protocol, and Network SQL Database Mechanism or other data processing units.

The invention provides for ordering pages of data in a computer operating system during execution of a program file according the order in which the pages are accessed. In one embodiment, a time-ordered access sequence of a plurality of uncompressed pages of data is traced. The plurality of uncompressed pages of data is then compressed into one or more blocks of compressed pages and correlated with the one or more blocks of compressed pages in a relocation directory. The one or more blocks of compressed pages can then be stored according to the time-ordered access sequence.

A host computer generates control and download command data for displaying the image or facsimile data. The image and facsimile data is processed by a non-programmable-terminal (NPT) or a programmable work station (PWS) for presentation of a display screen. When a user requests another function, the NPT or PWS stores image information and sends image information to the host computer. The save image information includes cache image counter data, scaling and viewed image screen location data that is used to restore the displayed image and facsimile data when the user returns to the previous function. Both the user and host application can specify a foreground color and a background color for the image and facsimile data display.

A method and apparatus are provided for detecting and controlling data stream splicing in a stream of multimedia digital data over a distribution communications network. Sequential transport stream packets are obtained. Predetermined fields of each transport stream packet are interrogated to identify a splice in the data stream. A predetermined task is initiated responsive to an identified splice. In accordance with feature of the invention, one predetermined task initiated responsive to the identified splice includes masking the interrogated predetermined fields to mask the splice in the data stream.

Responsive to receiving a stream request from the client multiplexer, the insertion server transfers the enqueued data. The client multiplexer includes a timer for identifying an offset time between sending the timing request and receiving a timing response from the insertion server. The client multiplexer uses the offset time to set a count down timer for sending the stream request. The client multiplexer processes the data transferred by the insertion server and optionally sends a stop stream command to the insertion server.

The server sets a trigger that recognizes a match of the client's predicted request. When a client's predicted request arrives, the trigger sends the response. Additionally, the server associates a timeout action with the predicted response so that if a predicted request is not received within the timeout interval or other events occur before the predicted request arrives, the triggered response is removed and an alternative action is performed.
