A method of making a waveguiding optical component includes processing a polymer optical material to form a billet having an axis of light transmission and having residual stress maintaining a transverse extent of the billet; placing the billet into a mold, the mold being configured to constrain transverse expansion of the billet according to a desired shape of the waveguiding optical component; and heating the billet in the mold to induce relaxation of the residual stress and corresponding transverse expansion of the billet, thereby forming the billet into the waveguiding optical component with the desired shape. An alternative method begins with a collection of individual canes or fiber segments which are fused during the heating process, bypassing a separate process of forming a billet.

Forming polymer optical devices by mold-constrained relaxation expansion

The present disclosure relates to a hybrid cable having a jacket with a central portion positioned between left and right portions. The central portion contains at least one optical fiber and the left and right portions contain electrical conductors. The left and right portions can be manually torn from the central portion.

Power/fiber hybrid cable

A fiber optic cable which comprises at least one subassembly. Each subassembly comprises 1 to 12 optical fibers, a plurality of yarn strength members free halogens, and a first jacket free of any halogens and having a thickness of between about 0.254 to about 0.305 mm. The first jacket surrounds and completely encases the 1 to 12 optical fibers and the plurality of yarn strength members to form the subassembly. The first jacket is manufactured from a material which has a limiting oxygen index (LOI) of at least 40 and a shrinkage of the first jacket being no greater than about 3.5%. The fiber optic cable has a crush resistance of at least 35N/cm, allows less than a 0.4 db/km increase of optical attenuation from &#x2212;20 to 70 C and meets requirements according to each of IEC 60332-3-24 (Flame Spread), IEC 61034-2 (Low smoke), and IEC 60754-1&2 (non-Halogen); and the fiber optic cable has a flexural modulus of about 40,000 psi.

A tool includes a base with first and second ends and sides. First, second, and third openings extend from the first end. A slot in the first side communicates with the first opening for receiving a cutting tool. Another slot communicates with the second opening for receiving a marking tool. The third opening forms a stop surface. A recess in the first side and in the second end defines a platform. A channel extends from the third opening thereacross to second end. Two pins project on opposite sides of the channel. The base includes a stationary portion on which the pins are located and a pivotal portion defining the second end. The stationary portion defines a supplemental end surface facing parallel to second end. A cutout aligned with the cable channel extends from the platform to the second side and from the supplemental end surface into the stationary portion.

Hybrid fiber/copper cable preparation tool

The present disclosure relates to a cable anchoring device for anchoring a fiber optic cable to a building, wall, pole or other structure. The cable anchoring device includes a spool component about which the fiber optic cable is wrapped at least two times. The cable anchoring device also includes a clamping component that cooperates with the spool component to anchor the cable.

A fiber optic cable includes an optical fiber, a strength layer surrounding the optical fiber, and a jacket assembly surrounding the strength layer. The jacket assembly includes a foam. A method for manufacturing a fiber optic cable includes mixing a base material, a chemical foaming agent and a shrinkage reduction material into a mixture in an extruder. The mixture is heated so that the base material and the chemical foaming agent form a foam with shrinkage reduction material embedded into the foam. An optical fiber and strength layer are fed into a crosshead. The mixture is extruded around the optical fiber and the strength layer to form a jacket assembly.
