Biocide compositions capable of increasing the fading resistance of a coating material, which compositions preferably comprise a nano-sized halogenated benzonitrile and a nano-sized zinc oxide, are disclosed. Coating compositions, which comprise the biocide compositions, binders, and pigments are disclosed. The biocide compositions are particularly suitable for use in paints. Methods for reducing the fading of pigmented coating compositions upon exposure to light are also disclosed.

Lithographic fountain solutions containing a surfactant-effective quantity of at least one reaction product comprising the following reactants: (A) at least one compound of formula IR(X)&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)wherein each X group is a halogen atom or one X group is a halogen atom and two X groups represent an epoxy oxygen atom, which is attached to two adjacent carbon atoms in the Rgroup to form an epoxy group, and Ris an alkanetriyl group containing from 3 to 10 carbon atoms; and (B) at least one compound having formula IIRX(AO)Y &#x2003;&#x2003;(II)wherein Ris a substituted or unsubstituted, saturated or unsaturated, organic group having from 1 to 36 carbon atoms; X is &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;S&#x2014;, or NR&#x2014; where Ris hydrogen or a C&#x2013;Calkyl group; each AO group is independently an ethyleneoxy, 1,2-propyleneoxy, or 1,2-butyleneoxy group, n is a number of from 0 to 200; and Y is hydrogen, or Y can be a mercapto group or an amino group or a C&#x2013;Calkylamino group in place of a terminal &#x2014;OH group, provided that when Y is mercapto or an amino group or a C&#x2013;Calkylamino group, n is at least 1.

A method for preventing the fading of pigmented coatings, especially water based acrylic paints, includes incorporating therein a biocide containing a mixture of from about 1% to about 99% by weight of a halogenated benzonitrile compound and from about 1% to about 99% by weight of a conazole compound.

Pigmented coatings exhibiting reduced fading

A process for preparing a defoamer composition by providing a high-shear, in-line mixer having a rotor-stator assembly with at least one concentric set of shearing teeth which rotate at a tip speed of up to about 25 meters per second and feeding to said mixer a melt of a hydrophobic defoaming agent along with a functional carrier liquid at a controlled mass flow rate and temperature. After mixing, the mixture is cooled and discharged into a receiving vessel.

Polymeric thickeners for aqueous compositions

A flexible packaging printing ink is formulated from a resin binder (e.g. an alcohol soluble polyamide or a water-dispersible polyacrylate), pigment, solvent (e.g. a lower alkanol or water), and an alkyl polyglycoside surfactant. Related methods, compositions and articles are also provided. A method of preparing a polyamide resin by condensing a dibasic acid mixture with a diamine mixture and melt blending the resin with an alkyl polyglycoside is also provided. These polymers are particularly useful as the binder for a flexible packaging laminating ink composition.
