A multi-phase switching mode power supply (SMPS) with adaptive synchronous drivers is provided. A pulse width modulator creates n periodic interleaved modulation pulses having a pulse width responsive to a load voltage. Modulation pulses are converted into selectively enabled driver pulses having a duty cycle responsive to the modulation pulse. The polarity of the voltage is detected at a completion of each driver pulse duty cycle. A comparator signal is supplied in response to comparing detected voltages to a reference voltage, and in turn, driver gating signals are supplied to selectively enable driver pulses in response to analyzing comparator signals. The comparator signals are summed and integrated. Driver pulses are enabled or disabled in response to the integrated sum. Energy is stored from each driver pulse into a corresponding inductor, and supplied as current to a load, creating the load voltage.

Multi-phase switching mode power supply with adaptive synchronous drivers

Systems and methods for chip to chip communication are disclosed. In an exemplary aspect, a chip to chip link comprises a master device having a data transmitter, a clock, a clock transmitter, a phase locked loop (PLL) associated with the clock, and a receiver. The chip to chip link also comprises a slave device that has a data transmitter, a clock receiver, and a data receiver. Noticeably absent from the slave device is a clock or a PLL. By removing the clock from the slave device, the slave device does not have the power consuming element of a slave PLL. Further, because the slave device does not have a clock which would normally have to acquire a new frequency and settle, the master clock may change frequency relatively quickly and vary the frequency across many frequencies, not just one or two predefined frequencies.

Systems and methods for chip to chip communication

Systems and methods for providing offset calibration for low power and high performance receivers are described herein. In one embodiment, a receiver comprises a sample latch having a first input coupled to a receive data path, and a second input. The receive also comprises a first digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a second DAC, and a calibration controller. In a calibration mode, the calibration controller is configured to input a calibration voltage to the first input of the sample latch using the first DAC, to input a threshold voltage and an offset-cancelation voltage to the second input of the sample latch using the second DAC, to adjust the offset-cancelation voltage, to observe an output of the sample latch as the offset-cancelation voltage is adjusted, and to store a value of the offset-cancelation voltage at which a metastable state is observed at the output of the sample latch in a memory.

Offset calibration for low power and high performance receiver

A receiver according to one aspect comprises a latch configured to sample a data signal according to a sampling clock signal, and a plurality of offset-compensation segments, wherein each of the segments is coupled to an internal node of the latch. Each of the segments comprises a compensation transistor, and a step-adjustment transistor coupled in series with the compensation transistor. The receiver further comprises an offset controller configured to selectively turn on one or more of the compensations transistors to reduce an offset voltage of the latch, and a bias circuit configured to apply a bias voltage to a gate of each of one or more of the step-adjustment transistors.

Accurate sample latch offset compensation scheme

In one embodiment, method for frequency division comprises propagating a modulus signal up a chain of cascaded divider stages from a last one of the divider stages to a first one of the divider stages, and, for each of the divider stages, generating a respective local load signal when the modulus signal propagates out of the divider stage. The method also comprises, for each of the divider stages, inputting one or more respective control bits to the divider stage based on the respective local load signal, the one or more respective control bits setting a divider value of the divider stage.

Fractional phase locked loop (PLL) architecture

Aspects disclosed in the detailed description include apparatuses, methods, and systems for glitch-free clock switching. In this regard, in one aspect, an electronic circuit is switched from a lower-frequency reference clock to a higher-frequency reference clock. An oscillation detection logic is configured to determine the stability of the higher-frequency reference clock prior to switching the electronic circuit to the higher-frequency reference clock. The oscillation detection logic derives a sampled clock signal from the higher-frequency reference clock, wherein the sampled clock signal has a slower frequency than the lower-frequency reference clock. The oscillation detection logic then compares the sampled clock signal against the lower-frequency reference clock to determine the stability of the higher-frequency reference clock. By deterministically detecting stability of a reference clock prior to switching to the reference clock, it is possible to avoid premature switching to an unstable reference clock, thus providing glitch-free clock switching in the electronic circuit.

A transmitter is provided that includes a voltage-mode driver and a current-mode driver. The current-mode driver includes a plurality of transconductors biased by high-pass filtered versions of a differential output voltage from the voltage-mode driver.

In one embodiment, a phase locked loop (PLL) comprises a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), a frequency divider configured to frequency divide an output signal of the VCO to produce a feedback signal, and a phase detection circuit configured to detect a phase difference between a reference signal and the feedback signal, and to generate an output signal based on the detected phase difference. The PLL also comprises a proportional circuit configured to generate a control voltage based on the output signal of the phase detection circuit, wherein the control voltage tunes a first capacitance of the VCO to provide phase correction. The PLL further comprises an integration circuit configured to convert the control voltage into a digital signal, to integrate the digital signal, and to tune a second capacitance of the VCO based on the integrated digital signal to provide frequency tracking.

An amplifier is provided that includes a differential pair of transistors configured to steer a tail current responsive to a differential input voltage. The amplifier also includes a transconductor that tranconducts high-frequency changes in the differential output voltage into a differential bias current conducted through the differential pair of transistors.

Systems and methods for providing offset calibration for low power and high performance receivers are described herein. In one embodiment, a method for offset calibration comprises inputting a first voltage to a first input of a sample latch, and inputting a second voltage and an offset-cancellation voltage to a second input of the sample latch. The method also comprises adjusting the offset-cancellation voltage, observing an output of the sample latch as the offset-cancellation voltage is adjusted, and recording a value of the offset-cancellation voltage at which a metastable state is observed at the output of the sample latch. The method may be performed for each one of a plurality of different voltage levels for the first voltage to determine an offset-cancellation voltage for each one of the voltage levels.

Systems and methods for generating clock phase signals with accurate timing relations are disclosed. For example, four clock signals spaced by 90 degrees can be generating from differential CML clock signals. A CML to CMOS converter converts the differential CML clock signals to differential CMOS clock signals and provides duty cycle correction. Delay cells produce delayed clock signals from the differential CMOS clock signals. The differential CMOS clock signals and the delayed clock signals are logically combined to produce four quarter clock signals having active times of one-quarter clock period. Set-reset latches produce the four clock signals from the quarter clock signals. A calibration module control delays of the delay cells and controls the duty cycle correction of the CML to CMOS converter to adjust the timing relationships of the four clock signals. The four clock signals may be used, for example, in a deserializer.
