A method for manufacturing a freestanding film having at least one population of through holes cumulatively totaling at least 1% of the film area, wherein the standard deviation of hole diameters is less than 25% and a thickness less than 25 micrometers, The film provides a carrier substrate, a photo-curable material, a release agent and deposits a photo-curable material on the substrate, selectively curing the material and leaving uncured material in the pattern of holes, dissolving away the uncured material and removing the cured material from the carrier substrate. Methods and apparatus are described.

Electrofluidic display and methods for making

A method for manufacturing an electrofluidic device comprising the steps of providing a first plate with features for holding a first fluid, filling a first fluid into features on a first plate; providing a second plate and sealing a second plate onto the first plate forming stacked plates with at least one cavity between the plates, and leaving at least one fill port for a second fluid. Thereafter, the stacked plates are cooled to increase the viscosity of the first fluid so that the first fluid maintains a fixed position as a second fluid is filled into the cavity. Methods are disclosed.

The device () may be an electronic device, and more particularly a portable electronic device such as a cell phone.

Controlled diffuse scattering for displays

A device, an electrode configuration and a sequence for activating those electrodes for the purpose of switching device states quickly with minimum flicker during bi-stable image reset. The disclosure addresses the constraints of electrofluidic technology: 1) the polar fluid can be attracted to a position with voltage, but it cannot be repelled, and 2) because the polar fluid translates, changing its area against an electrode and thereby changing the capacitance, the time to discharge the capacitor formed by area contact with a polar fluid is significantly smaller than the time to charge a capacitor, which requires translation of the fluid. Setting the grayscale is based on discharging, not charging, when possible. In addition, the use of pixel-level partial reset states reduces the appearance of flicker further by minimizing the change in pixel state during data write/update.

Display apparatus

A decorative housing () for a mobile device () includes a first faceted cell () having a first angled electro-optic element () disposed therein. Method and apparatus for providing a decorative surface

Disclosed is reflective morphable display with multi-layered depth viewing, low power consumption and few components and a method of activating various features thereof. The disclosed display includes a bi-stable reflective cholesteric liquid display crystal (ChLCD) layered in combination with a display device such as an LCD and a quarter lambda (&#x3bb;/4) retardation film layer. Linearly polarized light emerging from the front surface of a display device is circularly polarized by the &#x3bb;/4 layer before entering the ChLCD layer. In its reflective state, the ChLCD layer receiving a portion of the ambient light having the same handedness of the ChLCD is reflected in a mirror-like manner. Also in its reflective state, when it receives light that is circularly polarized by the &#x3bb;/4 retardation film layer, the ChLCD layer acts as a shutter. A display device with depth viewing is provided as the ChLCD layer pixelated so it is configured to display font and/or other indicia.

Reflective morphable display device and method of feature activation

A method is provided for preventing electron emission from a sidewall () of a gate electrode () and the edge () of the gate electrode stack of a field emission device (), the gate electrode () having a surface () distally disposed from an anode () and a side () proximate to emission electrodes (). The method comprises growing dielectric material () over the surface () and side () of the gate electrode (), and performing an anisotropic etch () normal to the surface () to remove the dielectric material () from the surface () and leaving at least a portion of the dielectric material () on the side () of the gate electrode () and edge () of the gate electrode stack.

Method for preventing electron emission from defects in a field emission device

A field emission device () is provided that prevents electrical breakdown. The field emission device () comprises an anode () distally disposed from a cathode plate that includes an insulating substrate () having a portion exposed to the anode (), and a cathode metal () overlying another portion of the insulating substrate (). A gate electrode () overlies an oxide () above at least a portion of the cathode metal () and optionally above a portion of the substrate. A dielectric layer () is positioned between a resistive layer () and the cathode metal (), and substantially all of the exposed substrate, and underlies substantially all of the gate electrode () including its edges (), providing a resistance between the cathode metal () and the edges ().

Field emission device

An emission device is provided for extracting electrons onto an anode of a visual display. The emission device () includes a conductivity limited material () positioned between first and second electrodes () and having a surface (). A plurality of catalytic nanoparticles () are distributed throughout the conductivity limited material (), wherein some of the catalytic particles () are contiguous to the surface (). A plurality of nanostructures (), such as carbon nanotubes, are grown from the catalytic nanoparticles () contiguous to the surface (). A voltage is applied across the conductivity limited material () having a plurality of catalytic particles () embedded therein, thereby causing the electrons to tunnel between the catalytic particles (). An anode () is spaced apart from the nanostructures () for extracting and receiving electrons emitted from the nanostructures () when a first potential is applied across the first and second electrodes () and a second potential is applied to the anode ().

Emitting device having electron emitting nanostructures and method of operation

A method is provided for bonding spacers () to an anode () and/or cathode () of a flat panel display. The method comprises forming a black matrix layer () between a ductile metal layer () and a first display plate (), the black matrix layer () and the ductile metal layer () defining a plurality of regions () surrounding a plurality of pixels (). A cathodoluminescent material () is formed within each of the pixels () and an aluminum layer () may be formed on the silver layer () and the cathodoluminescent layer (). A first end () of each of a plurality of spacers is attached to one each of the regions (), wherein a thermocompression bonding positions the spacer () contiguous to the ductile metal layer (). The second display plate (), e.g., cathode, is attached to a second end of each of the plurality of spacers ().
