The disclosed information-theoretic system and method exploit the properties of information to deduce a structure for information flow and management. A diagnostic system includes a vibration sensor mounted on a machine to measure vibrations. Vibration signals from the sensor are processed and analyzed by the system. From a known critical frequency of a vibration-generating component, the system measures the amplitude of the vibration signal at more than one harmonic frequency of the known critical frequency and compares the amplitudes to amplitudes at adjacent harmonic frequencies. When a relatively large amplitude is found at a harmonic frequency, that is a harmonic frequency near a resonant frequency of the physical path between the vibration sensor and the vibration-generating component, the system analyzes the shape and magnitude of the vibration signal around that harmonic frequency to evaluate the condition of the machine.

Machine diagnostic system and method for vibration analysis

A diagnostic system includes a vibration sensor mounted on a machine which has vibration-generating components having different vibration characteristics with respect to a common sensor. The vibration sensor measures vibrations and sends vibration signals to a diagnostic module for evaluation of the signals. The diagnostic module has software for processing the vibration signals. From a known natural frequency of a vibration-generating component, the diagnostic module measures the amplitude of the vibration signal at more than one harmonic frequency of the known natural frequency and compares the amplitudes to amplitudes at adjacent harmonic frequencies. When a relatively large amplitude is found at a harmonic frequency, that is a harmonic frequency near a resonant frequency of the physical path between the vibration sensor and the vibration-generating component, the diagnostic system can then analyze the shape and magnitude of the vibration signal around that harmonic frequency to evaluate whether each of the vibration-generating components is healthy, broken or about to break.

Anti-windup and noise protection that can be used with any general digital controller. The anti-windup technique allows the implementation of noise filtering techniques to decrease or eliminate chatter of the control output at the limit. In a higher order controller that uses a feedforward signal, the anti-windup technique prevents an unexpected change in the control output when a step change occurs in the feedforward signal. The technique can be used to provide anti-windup protection in both single layer and multi-layer control schemes.

A drowsiness detection system constructed according to the invention provides improved performance by preserving and analyzing newly discovered information contained in rhythmic signal components above 30 Hz which the prior art has universally ignored or discarded as 'noise.' In the first and second embodiments of the invention, one or more analog EEG signals are collected from a subject, appropriately filtered, converted into digital form, and subjected to frequency analysis. Selected signal components from the frequencies above 30 Hz (such as the frequency range 80-420 Hz), which have a high correlation with subject drowsiness, are isolated, and their amplitude, energy, or power contribution to the EEG signal is used to produce a continuous output measure reflecting the subject's alertness or drowsiness. The output measure may be compared with a threshold to provide an indication of whether the subject is excessively drowsy. In a third embodiment, the analog EEG signal is supplied to a plurality of analog signal processing channels corresponding to respective predefined frequency ranges. Selected signal components in frequencies above 30 Hz are isolated (in a manner analogous to that of the first and second embodiments), and their amplitude, energy, or power contribution to the EEG signal is used to produce a continuous output measure reflecting the subject's alertness or drowsiness.
