A heat exchanger for thermal management of battery units made-up of a plurality of battery cells or containers housing one or more battery cells is disclosed. The heat exchanger has a main body portion formed by a pair of outer plates and an intermediate plate defining a primary heat transfer surface on either side of the heat exchanger for contacting a corresponding surface of at least one of the battery cells or containers. The intermediate plate together with the outer plates forming a plurality of alternating first and second fluid flow passages the flow direction through the first fluid flow passages being generally opposite to the flow direction through the second fluid flow passages. The first and second fluid flow passages are formed on opposite sides of the intermediate plate and are fluidly interconnected at corresponding ends creating a counter-flow arrangement through the main body portion of the heat exchanger.

Counter-flow heat exchanger for battery thermal management applications

A battery cell cooler containing a pair of complementary plates. The pair of complementary plates together forms a tubular flow passage and one or more tubular sections. The flow passage has an inlet end, an outlet end and dimples or ribs along the length of the flow passage. The one or more tubular sections have an inlet duct and an outlet duct, the inlet duct being coupled to an expanded receptacle at the inlet end and in fluid communication with the inlet end of the flow passage and the outlet duct being coupled to an expanded receptacle, at the outlet end and in fluid communication with the outlet end of the flow passage. Also, disclosed is a device containing a battery cell sandwiched between a pair of battery cell coolers, as described herein. Further disclosed is a method for forming the battery cell cooler, as described herein.

Battery cell cooler

A plate and fin type heat exchanger has a heat exchanger core made from a plurality of stacked, alternating first and second heat exchange plates of a generally inverted, U-shaped cross-section. Each plate has a top wall, closed peripheral sidewalls and open ends, and the open ends of the first plates are oriented at 90&#xb0; to the open ends of the second plates. The sidewalls of the plates have end portions, which in adjacent plates, are aligned to form corners of the heat exchanger core. Opposed U-shaped manifold bodies are provided having open ends and lateral walls joined in a fluid tight manner to the aligned plate sidewall end portions. End plates close off the open ends of the U-shaped bodies to form manifolds. The corners formed by the aligned plate sidewall end portions allow for an improved connection between the heat exchanger core and the U-shaped manifold bodies. This helps to ensure that a fluid tight seal is created between the heat exchanger core and the manifold bodies when the components are joined together.

Alternating plate headerless heat exchangers

A heat exchanger suitable for a vehicle includes a plurality of tubular first members arranged in a row and forming elongate gaps. These members form passageways for flow of a first fluid for heat exchange with cooling air flowing through the gaps. The first members and gaps form a primary heat exchange area. Inlet and outlet manifolds are connected to the first members for directing the first fluid through the first members. An associated cooling device circulates liquid coolant and comprises flat tube-like second members, each extending into a respective gap in a secondary area which is part of the primary area but smaller. The second members each have a thickness at least the width of their respective gaps. At least some of the first members can be formed with cut-outs in opposite flat sides, these cut-outs being sealingly closed by the second members.

Heat exchanger using air and liquid as coolants

A heat exchanger has oil core plates and coolant core plates disposed in alternating, stacked relationship. Flow passages are provided between adjacent plates, so that the oil flow passages alternate with the coolant flow passages, and the oil can flow from an oil inlet opening of each oil plate, and through the oil flow passage to an oil outlet opening, and coolant can flow from a coolant inlet opening of each coolant plate through the coolant flow passage to a coolant outlet opening. The oil inlet openings are adjacent one end of the plates, and the oil outlet openings are spaced from the oil inlet openings, with a passageway for flow of the oil between upstanding bosses of the coolant plates on opposed sides of each oil plate and extending from a gap in an upstanding flange of the oil plate to the oil outlet opening.
