A vibration absorber assembly including a disc shaped housing having a central rotational axis and a plurality of radially elongated cavities, and a plurality of movable masses, each movable mass being housed in, and movable within, one of the plurality of radially elongated cavities. The plurality of movable masses are movable in the plurality of radially elongated cavities to absorb torsional vibration, and/or alter moment of inertia of the vibration absorber assembly.

An improved engine output shaft includes a crankpin assembly for operatively connecting the shaft to each reciprocating piston for translating the reciprocating motion of each piston to rotary motion of the shaft through a leverage arm between the axis of rotation of the shaft and the point of operative connection between each piston and the shaft. The crankpin assembly is fixed to rotate with the shaft and defines a plurality of fixed crankpin offsets and transition offsets which sequentially vary the moment arm in a predetermined manner during the rotation of the shaft to produce a substantially constant total engine torque output during each increment of rotational movement. A transition guide system is provided to create a smooth, controlled movement of a connecting rod between the fixed crankpin offsets. The transition guide system includes a plurality of rollers mounted on a transverse support connected to the crankpin and a guide cam surface formed on the connecting rod for guiding contact by the rollers. A crankpin offset maintaining system, including a roller mounted on a second transverse support and an abutment surface formed on the connecting rod, maintains the crankpin offsets during rotation between the transition periods.

Internal combustion engine with optimum torque output

An improved engine output shaft includes a crankpin assembly for operatively connecting the shaft to each reciprocating piston for translating the reciprocating motion of each piston to rotary motion of the shaft through a leverage arm between the axis of rotation of the shaft and the point of operative connection between each piston and the shaft. The crankpin assembly is fixed to rotate with the shaft and defines a plurality of fixed crankpin offsets and transition offsets which sequentially vary the moment arm in a predetermined manner during the rotation of the shaft to produce a substantially constant total engine torque output during each increment of rotational movement. A method for making the improved engine output shaft comprises the steps of providing aforedescribed crankpin assembly, determining a target value for total torque output for each increment of engine output rotation, selecting first estimated values for each of the plurality of fixed crankpin and transition offsets, calculating the engine output torque for each rotational increment for a single cylinder, summing the torque contributions and demands for all cylinders at each increment of shaft rotation to determine the total torque output for each increment, comparing the total torque output with the target value for each increment, selecting second estimated values for each of the plurality of fixed crankpin and transition offsets based upon the observed deviation from the target torque value and repeating the calculations until the selected offsets satisfactorily reproduce the target torque value.

A mechanism and method for increasing an internal combustion engine's output efficiency by improving the conversion of energy from a reciprocating piston motion to rotary output shaft motion by more closely matching the potential source work available from the reciprocating piston to the receiving work ability of the rotary shaft. An improved engine output shaft or output shaft design and the method of making same includes a work receiving guide on the output shaft that controls the transference of potential work to a substantially constant transitional work output. More specifically, an engine output shaft includes at least one disc-like element rotatably fixed thereto with a work receiving guide groove defined therein which engages with a lower end of a connecting rod pivotally extending from the reciprocating piston. During the power stroke, the work receiving guide means increases the length of the leverage arm and decreases the degree of angular movement associated with increments of equal displacement volume of the piston as the combustion force acting on the reciprocating piston decreases.

Internal combustion engine crankdisc and method of making same

The gas stream obtained from the pyrolysis of solid organic wastes and containing halogens, particularly chlorine in the form of the corresponding hydrogen halide is processed to obtain a halide free pyrolytic oil. The gas stream after solids removal is contacted with a solid metal halide acceptor above the dew point of pyrolyzate to form the corresponding metal halide which may be discarded. As an alternative the metal halide can be treated to release the hydrogen halide which is recovered as an acid and the acceptor regenerated for recycle. The preferred acceptor is calcium carbonate.

Removal of chlorine from pyrolysis vapors

A continuous method and closed cycle system for converting thermal energy to mechanical energy comprises vaporizing means, including an energy conversion tube comprising at least one nozzle section, for converting a liquid working fluid stream to a predominantly, by volume, vapor or an all vapor stream, turbine means operated by the stream for converting a portion of the vapor stream energy to mechanical shaft work; means for increasing the thermal and potential energy of the turbine exhaust stream and for condensing it to a substantially liquid stream; and means for recycling the liquid stream to the vaporizing means. The system has particular application to conventional refrigeration/heat pump cycles wherein the conventional throttling valve is replaced by a non-throttling nozzle and a turbine for capturing and using the work of expansion. Energy conversion tubes of the present system also find application in high flow rate, two phase flow applications, such as pressure vessel safety relief valves.

Method and apparatus for converting thermal energy to mechanical energy

A continuous method and closed cycle system for converting thermal energy to mechanical energy comprises vaporizing means for converting a liquid working fluid stream to a predominately, by volume, vapor or an all vapor stream; turbine means operated by the stream for converting a portion of the vapor stream energy to mechanical shaft work; means for increasing the thermal and potential energy of the turbine exhaust stream and for condensing it to a substantially liquid stream; and means for recycling the liquid stream to the vaporizing means. The means for converting a working fluid liquid stream comprises a tube having a plurality of flow converging areas alternating with a plurality of flow diverging areas, each flow converging area confining said flow to a greater extent than the flow converging areas upstream thereof, and each flow diverging area expanding said flow to a greater extent than the flow diverging areas downstream thereof.

A water immiscible amine-solvent system, preferably a solution of a water immiscible amine in mineral spirit solvent, is used to extract phosphate values from crude aqueous phosphoric acid solutions leaving behind impurities, e.g., calcium, magnesium, iron and aluminum. Phosphoric acid of water white quality may then be produced and removed from the amine-solvent organic phase by contacting the amine-solvent containing the extracted phosphate values with sulfur dioxide and water substantially in the absence of oxygen, the amount of water employed determining the concentration of phosphoric acid produced, thermally stripping the sulfur dioxide from the amine-solvent system substantially in the absence of oxygen in order to recycle both the amine-solvent system and sulfur dioxide.
