Compositions are described for protecting a metal surface against corrosion. The composition includes a corrosion-inhibiting particle. The corrosion inhibiting particle may be usable in an epoxy resin-based coating or an olefin resin-based coating. The particle may include a core and a protectant. The core may include a water soluble corrosion inhibitor. The protectant may be disposed on at least a portion of a surface of the core and may be covalently or ionically bonded to a thiol group of the corrosion inhibitor. The protectant may be configured to reduce reaction between the core and the epoxy resin or the olefin resin. Methods of making the compositions are also disclosed.

Compositions and coatings with non-chrome corrosion inhibitor particles

Compositions are described for protecting a metal surface against corrosion. The composition includes a corrosion-inhibiting particle. The corrosion inhibiting particle may be usable in an epoxy resin-based coating or an olefin resin-based coating. The particle may include a core and a protectant. A method of evaluating a coating applied to a surface comprises the step of applying the coating to the surface. The coating including a conversion gel to chemically bind the surface and an indicator substantially uniformly distributed throughout the coating wherein the indicator modifies an appearance of the coating. The method further comprising the step of determining whether the indicator is present on the surface at a substantially uniform concentration.

Colored coating and method

A binder formulation is provided that is capable of forming a heat and erosion resistant coating on the surface of a substrate, particularly a substrate comprising titanium or aluminum. The binder formulation comprises a metal alkoxide compound, such as a titanium alkoxide and an organosilane, such as 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GTMS). The binder material may be capable of strongly bonding the binder to the substrate. The binder coating may also include one or more additives that may help improve the heat resistance and impact absorbance of the coating. The binder may also include one or more pigments so that the resulting sol-gel coating has a desired appearance and properties. The sol-gel coating can be cured under ambient conditions and does not require additional heat curing.

A composition for coating a surface includes a carrier and an indicator distributed throughout the carrier. The indicator is configured to modify an appearance of the coating. The indicator facilitates determining a thickness of the coating in response to the appearance of the coating.

The sol-gel coating may be graded in its ceramic character by adjusting the organosilane component between TEOS and silanes that have more distinctive organic character by virtue of organic ligands attached to the silicon.
