An in-line electron gun includes a main lens having G3 and G4 three aperture electrodes and corresponding chain link (extended aperture) electrodes. The outer apertures in each of the G3 and G4 electrodes are barrel shaped and the middle aperture is elliptical. This construction maximizes the aperture area. The spacings between the G3 and G4 electrodes and their corresponding chain link electrodes are maximized within the existing size constraints of the gun. The combined effect weakens the electric field of the main lens which reduces spherical aberration.

A Uni-Bipotential in-line electron gun for a color cathode ray tube includes a specially shaped G4 electrode for compensating the gun for comatic distortion. In the G4 electrodes the three apertures are oblong in shape, with the two outer apertures being horizontally displaced from the beam axis to inwardly displace the electron beams so that they substantially fall on the respective optical axes of symmetry of the main lens.

A cathode ray tube electron gun (11) especially Well suited for projection-type cathode ray tubes is disclosed as having a main lens system where the upper end of the first accelerating electrode (21) fits through and within the lower end of the focus electrode (23) and the upper end of the focus electrode fits through and within the lower end of the second accelerating electrode (25). This construction and arrangement of the electrodes provides for larger apparent aperture(s) in both the decelerating lens gap and the accelerating lens gap or the main lens system which reduces spherical aberration to achieve a small spot size while providing increased grid separation for improved high voltage stability and an easily constructed gun.

Double immersion projection CRT gun

A three-beam unitized, in-line electron gun for a color cathode ray tube has a series of hollow, rectangulr-in-cross-section electrodes for the side-by-side accommodation of the three beams. A two-element anode electrode for the gun includes first and second cup-shaped elements each having an apertured electrode face. The second cup-shaped element is nested in the first element, and has a cup draw effective to provide a predetermined distance between the electrode faces when the cups are in nested relationship. The critical focusing and convergence of the gun can thereby be adjusted by the adjustment of the cup draw.
