An apparatus for resisting rotational movement of can ends in a downstacker is provided, that includes a housing having a bore, a ring having a bore that is disposed within the housing, a second ring having a bore that is disposed within the housing and a sleeve having a bore that is disposed within the housing wherein the bores of the ring, the second ring and the sleeve are in substantial alignment relative to each other. A process for making printing plate material suitable for imaging by laser radiation. A metal substrate is electrocoated in a bath containing a polymeric resin and laser-sensitive particles, thereby depositing a laser ablatable layer on a principal surface of the metal substrate. In one embodiment, the laser-ablatable layer is treated with a corona discharge for a time sufficient to render the layer non-ink wettable. In other preferred embodiments, the laser-ablatable layer is overcoated with an overlayer such as a non-ink wettable silicone layer or a water-wettable layer comprising an organophosphorus polymer, preferably a copolymer of acrylic acid and vinylphosphonic acid.

Printing plate material with electrocoated layer

A process for making lithographic sheet material suitable for imaging by laser radiation. A metal substrate is electrocoated in a bath containing a polymeric resin and laser-sensitive particles, thereby depositing a laser ablatable layer on a principal surface of the metal substrate. In one embodiment, the laser-ablatable layer is treated with a corona discharge for a time sufficient to render the layer non-ink wettable. Electrocoating process for making lithographic sheet material

In a process of fragmenting and segregating metallic components fabricated from different aluminum alloys, a method of removing tramp impurities therefrom is provided. The method comprises the steps of providing a feedstock comprised of the metallic components having mixed therewith tramp impurities, the alloys having different incipient melting temperatures. The feedstock is heated to effect incipient melting of the component having the lowest incipient melting temperature and is then agitated sufficiently to cause the component having the lowest incipient melting temperature to fragment. The agitation also causes the fragmented component to scour tramp impurities from the unfragmented feedstock. The fragmented components and tramp impurities are segregated from the unfragmented feedstock and fragmented components are separated from the tramp impurities.

Method of segregating metallic components and impurities

A recovery process is disclosed for reclaiming the lithium content from aluminum-lithium alloy scrap including establishing a three-layered electrolytic cell comprising a most dense lowest layer of molten aluminum-lithium alloy, a middle layer of molten salt electrolyte, and an uppermost layer of molten aluminum-lithium; maintaining the lowest layer of molten aluminum-lithium alloy at a positive DC voltage with respect to the uppermost layer of molten lithium; establishing a current flow through the cell; establishing a specified composition in the molten salt electrolyte such that lithium in the lowest layer is electrochemically oxidized and passes into the molten salt electrolyte as lithium ions and further such that said lithium ions are electrochemically reduced and pass into the uppermost layer as lithium metal; and withdrawing lithium from the uppermost layer.

Electrolytic process for recovering lithium from aluminum-lithium alloy

The present invention provides a process for recovering lithium from an aluminum-lithium alloy scrap including heating a lithium chloride-potassium chloride-lithium fluoride salt mixture in a separate bath melter vessel to form a molten salt bath reservoir; fluxing the molten salt with chlorine or hydrogen chloride gas to remove moisture; drying the aluminum-lithium scrap; heating the dried aluminum-lithium alloy scrap to form a molten reservoir of aluminum-lithium alloy; feeding low moisture molten salt and aluminum-lithium alloy to a three-layered electrolysis cell comprising a most dense lowest layer of molten aluminum-lithium alloy, a middle layer of molten salt electrolyte, and an uppermost layer of molten lithium; passing direct current through the cell with the aluminum-lithium alloy anodic; reducing lithium ions to lithium metal at a cathode suspended in the molten salt electrolyte; and removing lithium from said uppermost layer in said three-layered electrolysis cell.

Lithium transport cell process

In a process of fragmenting and segregating shredded metallic components fabricated from different aluminum alloys in which a fragmented component is provided, a method of removing fines for purposes of enhancing segregation of the alloys, the method comprising the steps of providing a feedstock comprised of said metallic components, said alloys having different incipient melting temperatures, the feedstock is shredded and thereafter screened to remove fines therefrom having at least sizes in a size range of the fragment component. The feedstock is heated to effect incipient melting of the component having the lowest incipient melting temperature and agitated sufficiently to cause the component having the lowest incipient melting temperature to fragment. The fragmented components are segregated from the unfragmented feedstock.

Method of segregating metallic components and removing fines therefrom

A continuous process for forming aluminum-lithium alloys is disclosed which comprises continuously monitoring the ingot casting rate and continuously adding a measured and controlled amount of molten lithium beneath the surface of a molten aluminum stream as it flows toward an ingot casting station. The amount of molten lithium to be added is based on the ingot casting rate, the ingot size and the lithium content of the alloy being cast.

Production of aluminum-lithium alloy by continuous addition of lithium

A continuous process is disclosed for the recovery of an aluminum alloy from aluminum scrap containing more than one alloy. The recovery is made in a manner which will conserve energy. The process comprises providing a feedstock containing at least two components therein comprised of different aluminum alloys, the components having at least parts thereof joined to each other. The feedstock is treated to cause the joined components to become detached from each other. One of the detached components is separated from the remainder of the feedstock, melted and thereafter continuously cast without substantially upgrading the composition thereof to provide a cast alloy having a composition substantially the same as that from which the separated component was fabricated. The treating may be accomplished by heating the feedstock to a temperature sufficiently high to render fracture sensitive the component having the lowest incipient melting temperature.

Continuous method for reclaiming, melting and casting aluminum scrap

Magnesium is produced by a thermal reduction process in a reaction-condensation system having a reaction zone and a condensation zone. According to this process, a reducing agent containing a mixture of ferrosilicon and at least 25 wt. % aluminum skim is contacted or reacted in the reaction zone with a calcium-silicon-aluminum-magnesium oxide slag to produce magnesium vapor. The magnesium vapor is transported from the reaction zone to the condensation zone and condensed therein.

Thermal reduction process for production of magnesium using aluminum

A rotatable furnace for treatment of metallic scrap is fed metallic scrap comprising at least two metallic components having different incipient melting temperatures. The furnace is heated to a temperature at least equal to the lowest incipient melting temperature of the metallic components but less than the incipient melting temperatures of other components in the scrap while rotating the furnace to agitate the scrap. The combination of heating to the incipient melting temperature and agitating the scrap serves to fragment the metallic component having the lowest incipent melting temperature. The scrap is then removed from the furnace, and the scrap is segregated by particle size. Fines representing dirt and other impurities may also be separated therefrom.

Magnesium is produced by a thermal reduction process in a reaction-condensation system having a reaction zone and a condensation zone. According to this process, a reducing agent containing ferrosilicon and at least 25 wt. % aluminum is contacted in the reaction zone with a calcium-silicon-aluminum-magnesium oxide slag to produce magnesium vapor. The magnesium vapor is transported from the reaction zone to the condensation zone and condensed therein. The slag is maintained to contain from 1 to 8 wt. % MgO, at least 9 wt. % Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and have a CaO/SiO.sub.2 weight ratio no less than that provided by the formula 2.1+0.03 (wt. % Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 -9). The slag is also maintained so as to decrepitate upon cooling.

Thermal reduction process for production of magnesium

A method of detaching and segregating metallic components secured to metallic articles is disclosed. The segregation is made in accordance with the alloy composition of the components. The method comprises the steps of providing articles having at least two components thereon comprised of different aluminum alloys and heating the articles to a temperature sufficiently high to initiate incipient melting of the component having the lowest incipient melting temperature. While at the lowest incipient melting temperature of the aluminum alloy component, the articles are subjected to agitation sufficient to cause the aluminum alloy component having the lowest incipient melting temperature to fracture and detach itself from the article. Thereafter, the detached components are segregated from the remaining articles and recovered.

Method of segregating metallic components

A method for purifying aluminum that contains impurities, the method including the step of introducing such aluminum containing impurities to a charging and melting chamber located in an electrolytic cell of the type having a porous diaphragm permeable by the electrolyte of the cell and impermeable to molten aluminum. The method includes further the steps of supplying impure aluminum from the chamber to the anode area of the cell and electrolytically transferring aluminum from the anode area to the cathode through the diaphragm while leaving impurities in the anode area, thereby purifying the aluminum introduced into the chamber. The method includes the further steps of collecting the purified aluminum at the cathode, and lowering the level of impurities concentrated in the anode area by subjecting molten aluminum and impurities in said chamber to a fractional crystallization treatment wherein eutectic-type impurities crystallize and precipitate out of the aluminum. The eutectic impurities that have crystallized are physically removed from the chamber. The aluminum in the chamber is now suited for further purification as provided in the above step of electrolytically transferring aluminum through the diaphragm.
