A method for automatically producing a new digital image from a first digital image that includes regions of interest, includes obtaining a main subject belief map including an array of belief values indicating the location and relative importance of subject matter in the first digital image; producing a mask for each privileged object in the first digital image, each such mask including margins around its corresponding privileged object; overlaying the mask(s) onto the belief map; and producing a first convex hull that includes the mask(s) with margin(s) and regions of the highest belief values from the belief map.

Method for creating photo cutouts and collages

A replaceable development station is provided for use with an electrostatographic machine in which a toner monitor is automatically calibrated when a fresh development station is loaded into the machine. The detected toner concentration in the development station is used by the monitor as a reference signal against which future readings are compared. The reference signal is reset upon machine power-up correspond to the detected toner concentration in the development station, but only when there is a fresh development station in the machine. The development station provides for indicating when the reference signal has previously been set for the developer mix. The reference value would not be reset upon other than the first time the machine is powered up with a particular development station. The indicating means is preferably a frangible member such as an electrical fuse.

A toner monitor in an electrostatographic machine is automatically calibrated when a new replaceable development station is loaded into the machine. The detected toner concentration in the development station is used by the monitor as a reference signal against which future readings are compared. The reference signal is reset upon machine power-up to correspond to the detected toner concentration in the development station, but only when there is a fresh development station in the machine. Resetting the reference signal only when there is a fresh development station prevents erroneous reference signals which would result if the developer mix concentration was other than perfect at power-down.

Developer mix monitoring for replaceable developer stations

An electrographic apparatus has a transparent photoconductor on which visible images are formed by applying toner to a latent electrostatic image. The toned image is subsequently transferred to a copy sheet and fused to the sheet. A post-development erase lamp is located on one side of the photoconductor. The density of toned images on the photoconductor is measured by light rays from the erase lamp traveling through the photoconductor and a toned control image thereon to a photodetector on the opposite side of the photoconductor. This eliminates the need for special lamps used only for measuring the density of toned control images.
