Ethylene is oxidized into ethylene oxide by bringing a feed gas mixture, which contains the ethylene, oxygen and at least 1 vol. % of carbon dioxide as well as at least 0.5 vol. ppm of a chlorine-containing burning reaction decelerator and at least 1 vol. ppm as calculated in terms of nitrogen monoxide of a nitrogen oxide and/or a precursor thereof, into contact with a catalyst which carries silver and as a practically sole alkali metal, rubidium at an Rb/Ag atomic ratio of 2/1000-7/1000 on a fire-resistant carrier having a specific surface area of 1 m.sup.2 /g or smaller.

This invention relates to a process for preparing acetic acid from carbon noxide gas and hydrogen gas, which process comprises catalytically reacting carbon monoxide gas and hydrogen gas under elevated pressures and in a liquid medium containing a ruthenium compound, cobalt compound and promoter(s).

Lower alcohols are prepared by hydrating the corresponding olefin in an aqueous solution containing a chromium compound, phosphoric acid and heteropolyacid. Phosphoric acid has a high catalytic activity for the hydration of lower olefins, but causes a remarkable corrosion to an apparatus material under the state of an aqueous solution. The catalytic composition consisting of phosphoric acid and heteropolyacid is improved in activity and stability. Owing to the coexistence of heteropolyacid an acid degree is raised, nevertheless the corrosion of apparatus materials is not increased. As an anti-corrosive a chromium compound is incorporated into the aqueous solution containing the catalytic composition of phosphoric acid and heteropolyacid.

Process for preparing lower alcohols

A process for catalytic gasification of heavy oil of a specific gravity of higher than 0.7 with steam or steam/oxygen-containing gas characterized in that the heavy oil is contacted with chromium oxide catalyst or a catalyst comprising a mixture of chromium oxide and one or more of alkaline earth metal oxides, aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, nickel oxide and cobalt oxide. More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for catalytic gasification of heavy oil of a specific gravity of higher than 0.7 characterized in that the heavy oil is contacted with a gasification catalyst comprising calcium aluminate, an alkali aluminate or tungsten-containing nickel and then the heavy oil is further contacted with said chromium oxide catalyst or chromium oxide-containing catalyst.

Catalytic gasification

A gasification process for forming a gas mixture containing hydrogen wherein a hydrocarbon including a heavy residual oil is atomized with a mixture of an oxygen-containing gas and steam in an atomizing zone, the formed jet streams containing the atomized hydrocarbon drops are introduced to the catalyst bed while adjusting the residence time in the atomizing zone to 0.05 to 5 seconds, substantially without forming eddy currents and the reaction is carried out at a temperature of at least 850.degree. C. to form said gas mixture while avoiding deposition of solid carbon on said catalyst bed.
