A series hybrid vehicle control method controls a series hybrid vehicle including a power generation system that generates electric power by driving an electric generator with an internal combustion engine. A control unit is configured to, in a case where a failure occurs in the power generation system, limit a torque of the internal combustion engine, set an engine rotation speed at which power generation efficiency of the electric generator is maximized within a range in which the torque is limited, and control the internal combustion engine based on the engine rotation speed.

A negative pressure control valve () is disposed in a part of an intake passage () upstream of a confluence () of an EGR passage () and the intake passage (). When in an EGR region (Regr) where an EGR gas is recirculated to the intake passage () through the EGR passage (), the negative pressure control valve () is controlled in a manner to ensure a differential pressure between an exhaust passage () and the intake passage (). When in an operation region (R) lower in load than the EGR region (Regr), the negative pressure control valve () is controlled in a closing direction so as to suppress occurrence of noise.
