A simulation of behavior of a recording medium, which moves a conveyance path of an image forming apparatus, is performed. A transport error of the recoding medium is obtained based on a result of the simulation, and the transport error indicates a deviation between an orientation of the recording medium moving the conveyance path in an ideal transport state in which there is no disturbance, and a simulated orientation of the recording medium. A geometric characteristic screen is generated to present the obtained transport error.

A recording-medium-type setting unit selects a type of a recording medium to be analyzed on the basis of information input with an input unit. A threshold-value setting unit sets a threshold value on which the determination of whether the calculation result is output in a file is based for each recording medium type selected by the recording-medium-type setting unit. An amount-of-variation calculating unit calculates the reaction force for every time step, stores the reaction force in the current time step in time integration in a RAM during the calculation, and monitors the amount of variation in the reaction force between each time step and the next time step. A file-output controlling unit calculates the difference between the reaction force stored by the amount-of-variation calculating unit and the reaction force in the current time step and, if the difference is larger than the threshold value, performs file output.

An image forming apparatus includes: a rotating belt which rotates around a roller; a drive section which rotates the belt; a detection section which detects a position of the belt in a width direction; a moving section which moves the belt in the width direction; a control section which corrects a deviation of the belt by controlling the moving section. The control section conducts a preparatory operation in which the control section changes an amount of control to be given to the moving section under the condition where the belt is rotated to obtain a correction data showing a relation between the amount of control and a change of a position of the belt in the width direction detected by the detection section, stores the correction data in a memory section, and then corrects the deviation based on the correction data stored in the memory section.
