An object of embodiments according to the invention is to provide a cutting tool having good wear resistance, good sliding property and good fracture resistance. A cutting toolcomprising a substrateand a coating layeror a coating layerwhich covers a surface of the substrate. The coating layeror the coating layercomprising a first layerand a second layer. The first layercomprises TiAlWSiM(CN) when M is at least one selected from Nb, Mo, Hf and Y, 0.45&#x2266;a&#x2266;0.55, 0.01&#x2266;b&#x2266;0.1, 0&#x2266;c&#x2266;0.05, 0.01&#x2266;d&#x2266;0.1, 0&#x2266;x&#x2266;1). The second layercomprises TiAlSiM'(CN) when M&#x2032; is at least one selected from Nb, Mo, Ta, Hf and Y, 0.50&#x2266;e&#x2266;0.60, 0&#x2266;f&#x2266;0.1, 0.05&#x2266;g&#x2266;0.15, 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;1).

Cutting tool

A cubic boron nitride sintered material where wear resistance is suppressed from decreasing having excellent chipping resistance and a cutting tool made thereof are provided. The sintered material is constituted from cubic boron nitride particles that are bound by a binder phase, while the binder phase contains a carbide of at least one kind of metal element selected from among metals of groups 4, 5 and 6 of the periodic table and a nitride of at least one kind of metal element selected from among metals of groups 4, 5 and 6 of the periodic table coexisting therein, and therefore the particles can be suppressed from coming off and the binder phase can be suppressed from wearing and coming off at the same time, thereby making the sintered material having high wear resistance and particularly excellent chipping resistance.

Cubic boron nitride sintered material and cutting tool using the same

A cutting tool having a substrate and a coating layer for coating the surface of the substrate, the coating layer being composed of TiAlWSiM(CN), where M is at least one selected from Nb, Mo, Ta, Hf and Y, 0.45&#x2266;a&#x2266;0.55, 0.01&#x2266;b&#x2266;0.1, 0.01&#x2266;c&#x2266;0.05, 0.01&#x2266;d&#x2266;0.1, and 0&#x2266;x&#x2266;1. The cutting tool has excellent wear resistance and fracture resistance. The cutting tool may be further provided with a layer composed of at least one selected from carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of Al and the elements of the groups 4, 5 and 6 of the periodic table.

The composite structure of the present invention comprises an elongate core material of a sintered diamond material comprising 80% by volume or more diamond particles of a mean particle size not larger than 3.5 &#x3bc;m that are bound by an iron group metal; and a shell layer of a sintered alloy comprising at least one kind of hard particles selected from among carbide, nitride and carbonitride of at least one metal element selected from the group of 4a, 5a and 6a group metals of the Periodic Table and diamond particles having a mean particle size not larger than 5 &#x3bc;m that are bound by an iron group metal, wherein content of the diamond particles in the shell layer is from 5 to 45% by volume, thereby improving wear resistance, adhesion resistance and chipping resistance of cutting tool, while maintaining high hardness and high strength.

Composite construction

The composite construction of the present invention comprises a continuous core material made of a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) obtained by bonding diamond particles with an iron group metal ; and a shell layer made of a sintered body obtained by bonding hard particles with an iron group metal ; wherein an amount of the iron group metal in the core material is larger than that of the iron group metal in the shell layer
