CPCS-UU in the CPCS-PDU trailer defined by the AAL Type 5 in an ATM network is used as a sequence number for error handling. CPCS-UU in the CPCS-PDU trailer is used as a sequence number of an MPEG-2 transport stream packet contained in CPCS-PDU; by monitoring the number of packets, and based on the check results of CRC-32, LI, and cell count, error handling is performed at the receiving end, and for corrupted packets, null packets are inserted in place of the corrupted packets.

A method is provided for automatically adjusting the output signal level from a transmitting apparatus, in which the transmitting apparatus recognizes the distance to a receiving apparatus and automatically adjusts the signal output level. In a system in which a signal is transmitted from a transmitting apparatus via a coaxial cable to a receiving apparatus, the signal output from the transmitting apparatus is gradually changed, a judgment being made as to whether or not reception of the signal is possible at the receiving apparatus. When this condition is achieved, notification of the condition is made to the transmitting apparatus which when receiving this notification, sets the signal level to the signal level at that time, thereby setting the signal level to the level which is the receiving limit at the receiving apparatus. Thus the signal output level of the transmitting apparatus is set to a signal output level that corresponds to the length of the coaxial cable between the transmitting apparatus and the receiving apparatus.

A call waiting processing system used in an ISDN network includes an originating terminal unit and a destination terminal unit. To reduce an inefficient load on the terminal units, resulting from an unacceptable call setting, the system is configured such that when the originating terminal unit is in a calling mode, provided that the destination terminal unit is in a busy mode, the originating terminal unit requests a notification of a waiting period available for call setting to the destination terminal unit. When the destination terminal unit receives a notification request for a waiting period from the originating terminal unit, it notifies the originating terminal unit of the waiting period.

During an execution of communications between an originating terminal and a receiving terminal which are connected through an ISDN, when an item of information saying that a rate at which charges for the communications are shared between these terminals is changed to a given rate is transmitted from either the originating terminal or the receiving terminal to the ISDN, the communication charges after transmitting this item of information are imposed on the originating terminal and/or the receiving terminal in accordance with this rate presented. If an agreement of the other terminal is not obtained on this occasion, the charges are imposed on the originating terminal and/or the receiving terminal in accordance with an original accounting rate or the rate presented from the other terminal.
