A first-stage furnace for partial combustion of solid fuel and oxidizer gas to generate inflammable exhaust gases which are passed to a secondary-stage furnace is shown. The first-stage furnace comprises a vertical pre-combustion chamber and a likewise cylindrical main combustion chamber mounted in horizontal position, connected downstream of the pre-combustion chamber through a tangential connecting passage. The air-fuel mixture introduced into the pre-combustion chamber is given swirling motion and burned at a temperature that converts the mixture to a mix of incompletely burned fuel particles, exhaust gases and non-combustible products in molten state. The mix stream into the tangential passage into the main combustion chamber develops into a high-velocity vortex, with the molten slag being centrifuged onto the inner wall of the main combustion chamber to form a film which is extracted out through a tapping port. Thus, the inflammable gases generated are free from non-combustible products such as ash, and conveyed to the secondary-stage furnace, through the gas transport duct.

Method and apparatus for partial combustion of coal

A combustor of a gas turbine having a double wall construction in one part of the combustor, wherein an outer plate is formed with a multiplicity of cooling air inlet apertures and an inner plate is formed with a multiplicity of cooling air outlet apertures. The inner and outer plates are connected together by a multiplicity of connectors formed of heat conductive material and define therebetween a space. The cooling air inlet apertures are greater in diameter but smaller in total area than the cooling air outlet apertures which are inclined at an angle of 30 degrees. Cooling air introduced into the space through the cooling air inlet apertures impinge on the inner surface of the inner plate and performs impinge cooling while the connectors perform pin fin cooling. The cooling air also performs film cooling as it flows along the outer surface of the inner plate after cooling the walls of the cooling air outlet apertures while being released.

Combustor of gas turbine

A combustor device of a gas turbine engine, which combustor device is supplied with compressed air from a compressor and delivers combustion gas to a turbine, comprises an outer casing and an inner casing defining therein a combustion chamber and forming between the outer and inner casings an annular passage for the intake of the compressed air, a swirler opening being provided at the innermost end of the inner casing for taking the compressed air into the combustion chamber. Swirling motion of the compressed air around the inlet of the swirler opening, which causes static pressure drop at the swirler opening inlet and resultant undesirable combustion, is effectively prevented by providing swirl preventing vanes between the inner and outer casings. When the swirl preventing vanes are provided near the swirler opening, guide vanes may be provided near the upstream end of the annular passage to intentionally impart swirling motion to the compressed air to prevent non-uniform distribution of the supplied compressed air.
