Cooling rolls are spaced to have a gas of a size greater than thickness of metal thin bodies to be produced. A nozzle is arranged to eject molten metal onto a surface of the cooling roll. The first cooling roll quenches molten metal ejected from the nozzle into metal thin bodies. On the next cooling roll, the produced metal thin bodies are hit into flakes and excessive molten metal is made into metal thin bodies. Thus, freedom of supplying the molten metal flakes can be efficiently produced.

Metal-flake manufacturing apparatus

A titanium aluminide is composed of 31.5 to 33.5 weight % of Al, 1.5 to 2.3 weight % of Fe, 1.5 to 2.1 and 3.7 to 4.8 weight % of Nb, 0.07 to 0.12 weight % of B with remainder being Ti and inevitable impurities. The 1.5-2.0 weight % of Nb may be replaced with 0.5 to 2.0 weight % of V if severe oxidation resistance is not necessary. The titanium aluminide is melted and poured into a mold, and the melt is cooled in the mold naturally.

Precision casting titanium aluminide

A titanium aluminide is composed of 31 to 34 mass % of Al, 1.5 to 3.0 mass % of Fe, 0.5 to 2.0 mass % of V, 0.18 to 0.35 mass % of B with remainder being Ti and inevitable impurities. The 0.5 to 2.0 mass % of V may be replaced with a 1.0 to 3.0 mass % of Mo or a 0.3 to 1.5 mass % of Cr. By precision casting this alloy, a novel titanium aluminide alloy is obtained in which numerous whisker-like Ti--B compound are uniformly dispersed. The titanium aluminide alloy does not possess a coarse lamellar structure which would cause cracking.

Titanium aluminides and precision cast articles made therefrom

Cut-out portions or horizontal passages in the form of an inverted T are provided to melt solidified shells grown at triple points at which side seal plates, colling rolls and molten metal are made contact with each other. Pouring holes or slits are provided for inside pouring. Length of the slit in the cast widthwise direction is preliminarily determined so as to maintain temperature distribution in molten bath uniformly. Start of a continuous casting operation is facilitated by movable baffer plates disposed at open ends of the horizontal passage.

Cobalt, nickel and/or radioactive cobalt are separated from an alloy containing elements belonging to the iron group or family in such a manner that the alloy is melted in a molten bath of tin, lead and/or an alloy thereof whose weight is more than ten times as heavy as the alloy and then silicon is added to the molten bath so that a Fe-Si phase floats up and is separated, concentrating the cobalt and nickel in said bath.

An electric smelting furnace in which a hollow electrode with the wall thickness depending upon the depth of current penetration is disposed vertically within the furnace and spaced by a desirable distance from the furnace bottom, and the top of the hollow electrode is connected to a duct for discharging the furnace off-gases and charging the raw materials into the furnace after they are preheated by the furnace off-bases in the duct and prereduced in the hollow electrode.
