A method for producing silica brick comprising firing a siliceous stone material containing silica as a main component is disclosed, in which 0.05 to 0.25% by weight of Na.sub.2 O--CaO--SiO.sub.2 fused and solidified material and 0.1 to 1.0% by weight, in terms of Fe.sub.2 O.sub.3, of iron oxide are added to the siliceous stone material, before firing. Transformation of silica into tridymite is effectively accelerated to provide silica bricks mainly comprising tridymite with reduced contents of residual silica and amorphous glass and exhibiting improved creep resistance.

A mold additive suitable for use in a mold for continuous casting of steel which comprises, as its base material, at least 50% by weight of synthetic calcium silicate which contains CaO and SiO.sub.2 in a total amount not less than 70% by weight, and whose CaO/SiO.sub.2 ratio is not lower than 1.20. A mold additive of low bulk density and superior in heat insulation can be obtained and its CaO/SiO.sub.2 ratio can be widely adjusted.

The present invention relates to a two-part gunning refractory composition wherein fine powders of a refractory aggregate and superfine refractory powders are previously made into the form of a slurry containing therein a deflocculant, thereby reducing the amount of aluminous cement and also reducing the amount of water to achieve a deposit applied by gunning having a quality comparable to one produced by casting.

Two-part gunning refractory composition

A low cement refractory gun mix is disclosed. The gun mix comprises a coarse refractory portion having a particle diameter of at least 74 microns and a fine powder portion having a particle diameter of at most 74 microns. The gun mix is prepared by forming the fine powder portion into a slurry and deflocculating it prior to mixing it with the coarse refractory portion rather than deflocculating it when it is introduced into a spray gun. The gun mix has an extremely low cement and water content. Accordingly, a sprayed deposit of high packing density can be obtained which is equal in quality with deposits produced by vibration molding or casting. The gun mix is appropriate for use in forming the entire work lining of containers for molten metal.

The present invention provides an improved lining structure composition on the inner surface of a tundish by forming an alumina-silica-base intermediate lining layer over which a magnesian surface coating layer is formed by gunning. It solves the adhesion defect on a refractory lining of the tundish and enables longer operation of the tundish.
