A method of switching a communication channel when a mobile station moves from one service area to another service area is disclosed. The mobile station determines a difference between the transmission phase of a frame synchronizing signal received from a first base station currently holding a communication channel with the mobile station and the transmission phase of a frame synchronizing signal received from a second base station expected to newly set up a communication channel with the mobile station. The mobile station sends phase difference information representative of the above difference to the first base station via the communication channel. The first base station having received the phase difference information transfers the information to the second base station, causing it to correct the phase of data thereof to be sent to the mobile station. This successfully implements soft handover while guaranteeing the phase synchronization of frames sent from the two base stations.

A code-division multiple-access receiver carries out the following steps whenever it recognizes a symbol boundary in the received baseband signal. First, using the despreading code of the relevant station, it estimates the value of the symbol. Next, using the spreading code of the station, it estimates an interference signal, and modifies the baseband signal by subtracting the interference signal. These steps can be iterated for each symbol. The iterations can be organized into stages, with estimated symbol values from one stage passed to the next stage for use in estimating new symbol values in that next stage. At the end, the remaining baseband signal can be used to adjust the final estimated symbol values.

A code-division multiple-access system has a downstream channel for transmission from a base station to a number of mobile stations, and an upstream channel for transmission from the mobile stations to the base station. On the downstream channel, each mobile station's spreading code is divided into two parts, which modulate data transmitted on in-phase and quadrature carriers, respectively, thereby enabling the length of the spreading code to be doubled without increasing the chip rate. On the upstream channel, as soon as a symbol is received from one mobile station, it is despread to estimate its value, then respread and canceled as interference with respect to the other mobile stations, these processes being iterated in a cyclic order of the mobile stations.
