A control apparatus judges an abnormality of an internal combustion engine. The engine has an external EGR apparatus, including an exhaust gas recirculation passage that connects an exhaust passage with an intake passage, and an EGR valve that can increase and decrease an outside EGR flow quantity that flows back into the intake passage from said exhaust passage through the exhaust gas recirculation passage by being adjusted in its opening angle. The control apparatus acquires an output value of the engine and determines occurrence of abnormality in the external EGR apparatus according to a predetermined criterion based on a difference between an output of the engine in which a first EGR flow quantity is flown back and an output of the engine in which a second EGR flow quantity is flown back.

A vehicular damping control system that executes damping control that suppresses sprung mass vibration in the vehicle by controlling a power source mounted in a vehicle changes the control mode of the damping control according to the operating range of the power source. Changing the control mode of the damping control according to the operating range of the power source enables the vehicular damping control system to improve coordination between the damping control and other control related to the power source, for example, and thus execute appropriate damping control.

In a vibration-damping controlling apparatus for performing vibration-damping control which is control to suppress sprung vibration occurring in a vehicle by controlling torque generated in a wheel of the vehicle, the vibration-damping control is inhibited by making magnitude of vibration-damping torque as a torque for vibration damping capable of suppressing the sprung vibration different from the magnitude of the vibration-damping torque when learning of an air-fuel ratio is not performed, during the learning of the air-fuel ratio at the time of operation of an engine as a power source of the vehicle. According to this, it becomes possible to inhibit the vibration-damping control and control of learning correction of the air-fuel ratio from interfering with each other.

The control device of the internal combustion engine appropriately controls plural exhaust valves to effectively perform sulfur poisoning recovery in an exhaust gas purifying catalyst. The control device controls the internal combustion engine which performs lean burn. The exhaust system of the internal combustion engine includes: first exhaust valves and second exhaust valves provided in each of the plural cylinders; a first exhaust passage communicating with the first exhaust valves; a second exhaust passage communicating with the second exhaust valves; a first exhaust gas purifying catalyst provided at least one of the first exhaust passage and the second exhaust passage; and a second exhaust gas purifying catalyst provided on an exhaust passage downstream of a junction of the first exhaust passage and the second exhaust passage. The control means controls the exhaust valves such that an effect of rich combustion occurs more to the second exhaust gas purifying catalyst than to the first exhaust gas purifying catalyst, when performing rich combustion. By this, the consumption of the exhaust gas in the first exhaust gas purifying catalyst can be suppressed, and the temperature of the second exhaust gas purifying catalyst can be effectively risen. Therefore, the sulfur poisoning recovery and the like can be effectively performed.

Control device of an internal combustion engine

In a V-type six cylinder engine, cylinder groups are provided in which a plurality of cylinders are arranged divided into left and right first and second banks. An intake pipe, a first exhaust pipe, and a second exhaust pipe are connected to the cylinder groups of the banks. A first upstream three-way catalyst and a first control valve are provided in one exhaust pipe while a second upstream three-way catalyst and a second control valve are provided in the other exhaust pipe. The exhaust pipes are communicated together upstream of the upstream three-way catalysts and the control valves by a communicating pipe. A third control valve that adjusts the flowrate of exhaust gas is provided in the communicating pipe.

Internal combustion engine and control method thereof

A first cylinder and a second cylinder are provided. A first exhaust pipe is connected to the first cylinder and a second exhaust pipe is connected to the second cylinder. A communicating pipe connects together an intermediate portion of the first exhaust pipe with an intermediate portion of the second exhaust pipe. An exhaust gas control catalyst is arranged in the second exhaust pipe downstream of the portion to which the communicating pipe is connected. Exhaust gas amount reducing devices are provided which reduce the amount of exhaust gas that flows from the first exhaust pipe into the second exhaust pipe through the communicating pipe during execution of rich/lean burn control which performs combustion with an air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture that is richer than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio in one of the first cylinder and second cylinder and performs combustion with an air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture that is leaner than the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio in the other cylinder.

A control apparatus of an internal combustion engine includes a fuel pressure sensor to detect the pressure of the fuel supplied from a fuel pump to an injector; an in-cylinder pressure sensor, which serves as a combustion chamber temperature detecting unit that detects the temperature in the combustion chamber or the parameter depending on the temperature, to detect in-cylinder pressure (combustion chamber pressure); and an ECU that controls to execute the first fuel injection of each cylinder by the injector when the fuel pressure detected by the fuel pressure sensor is not less than a predetermined threshold fuel pressure and when the in-cylinder pressure detected by the in-cylinder pressure sensor is not less than a threshold in-cylinder pressure.

The air/fuel ratio (A/F) controller for an internal combustion engine having an upstream catalyst, a hydrocarbon-adsorbent exhaust purification (HAEP) catalyst that is disposed downstream from the upstream catalyst, an upstream A/F sensor disposed upstream from the upstream catalyst, a downstream A/F sensor disposed downstream from the HAEP catalyst, a middle A/F sensor disposed between the upstream catalyst and the HAEP catalyst, an A/F main feedback (F/B) control unit, and an A/F sub-F/B control unit. The A/F main F/B control unit performs main F/D control such that the exhaust A/F detected by the upstream A/F sensor is kept at a specific main F/B target A/F. The A/F sub-F/B control unit performs sub-F/B control such that the exhaust A/F detected by the downstream A/F sensor is kept at a specific sub-F/B target A/F during hydrocarbon desorption from the HAEP catalyst.

Air/fuel ratio controller for internal combustion engine

An exhaust purifying apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a catalyst that purifies exhaust gas from the engine, a first passage that allows exhaust gas to flow from the engine to the catalyst, and a second passage that allows exhaust gas to flow from the engine to the catalyst. The first passage includes an accelerated cooling portion whose cross section is designed so that a relatively large quantity of heat is released from the exhaust gas in the first passage, and the second passage has a cross section designed so that a relatively small quantity of heat is released from the exhaust gas in the second passage. The apparatus further includes a flow amount controller that controls amounts of exhaust gas flowing through the first and second passages, such that the amount of exhaust gas flow through the first passage is made larger than that through the second passage when the temperature of exhaust gas emitted from the engine is to be lowered by a relatively large degree before reaching the catalyst, and such that the amount of exhaust gas flow through the second passage is made larger than that through the first passage when the temperature of exhaust gas emitted from the engine is to be lowered by a relatively small degree before reaching the catalyst.

Exhaust purifying apparatus and method for internal combustion engine

A brake system of an engine comprising a brake booster. A restricted portion is formed in an intake passage upstream of a throttle valve and mass flow meter. A vacuum takeout port opens in the restricted portion. The vacuum generated in the restricted portion is led through a check valve to the brake booster. At the time of operating of the brake booster, the air ejected from the vacuum takeout port is measured by the mass flow meter as part of the intake air.

An exhaust purifier for an internal combustion engine is capable of properly heating a catalyst in consideration of a deterioration with time and manufacturing variation in an electric heater that heats the catalyst. The exhaust purifier has the catalyst 4 disposed in an exhaust pipe, the electric heater for forcibly heating the catalyst 4, a power source for supplying power to the heater, an estimate unit for estimating the temperature that the catalyst 4 will reach, a comparator for providing the difference between the estimated temperature and a target temperature, and an operation controller for controlling the operating conditions of the engine according to the temperature difference. The estimate unit measures the voltage and current of the heater, calculates the resistance or power of the heater according to the voltage and current, and estimates the temperature. The operation controller adjusts the quantity of intake air and ignition timing, or adjusts ignition timing and then the quantity of intake air to maintain an engine speed, or, if a battery 6 is abnormal, adjusts the quantity of intake air and ignition timing to increase the temperature of exhaust gas.

Exhaust purifier for internal combustion engine

A device for detecting deterioration of a catalyst in an internal combustion engine having a heater on the upstream side of a catalytic converter provided in an exhaust gas passage, the device being capable of expanding the deterioration determination conditions of the catalyst. It is determined whether the conditions, except the temperature condition, are all obtained among the conditions for detecting deterioration of the catalytic converter. When the conditions, except the temperature condition, are all obtained, an electric power is supplied from a power source to the heater to satisfy the temperature condition. Deterioration of the catalyst can be reliably detected if the electric power is supplied to the heater only when the engine is in the idling operation condition and if deterioration of the catalyst is detected when the time for supplying electric power to the heater has become larger than a predetermined period of time. The heater may be one contained in the electrically heated catalyst.

Device for detecting deterioration of catalytic converter for cleaning

An exhaust purifier of an internal combustion engine supplies secondary air into an exhaust pipe without cooling nor inactivating an electrically heated catalyst (EHC) that is active. The exhaust purifier includes the EHC 3 disposed in the exhaust pipe 2, a main catalyst 4 disposed in the exhaust pipe 2 downstream from the EHC 3, and a unit for supplying secondary air into the exhaust pipe 2. The secondary air supply unit has a main path 10 for supplying secondary air into a space defined in the exhaust pipe 2 between the EHC 3 and the main catalyst 4 when it is determined that the main catalyst 4 is active. The secondary air supply unit may additionally have a second path 9 for supplying secondary air into the exhaust pipe 2 on the upstream side of the EHC 3 when it is determined that the EHC 3 is active, so that the secondary air may pass through the EHC 3 and reach the main catalyst 4.

Exhaust purifier of internal combustion engine

An onboard load control apparatus and a method for detecting a fault of an onboard electrical load with high accuracy are disclosed. The control apparatus comprises an onboard battery mounted on an automotive vehicle, an electrical heater for electrically heating an electrical load such as an electrically-heated catalyst supplied with power from the onboard battery, an auxiliary relay for turning on/off the power to the electrical heater from the onboard battery, and an ECU for controlling the on/off operation of the auxiliary relay. The apparatus further comprises an engine speed detector for detecting the engine speed of the internal combustion engine and a fault judgement unit for judging whether the electrical heater is normal or faulty on the basis of the fluctuation amount of the engine speed of the internal combustion engine detected by the engine speed detector before and after switching the auxiliary relay. A fault of the electrical load is judged by detecting the voltage across the onboard battery while taking the fluctuation amount of the same voltage into consideration. The apparatus further comprises a load condition holder for holding the load condition of a specific load while the engine speed or the battery voltage is detected.

Automotive onboard load control apparatus and method

This invention is concerned with a fuel-vapor treatment method and apparatus for an internal combustion engine that do not introduce perturbations in the air/fuel ratio during purge-on or purge-off operations. According to the method and apparatus disclosed herein, a sensor output voltage .alpha. (for example, 4.5 V) is set that indicates a catalyst atmosphere neither rich nor lean, or in other words, at stoichiometry. When the present output voltage of a sub O.sub.2 sensor is greater than .alpha., indicating a rich atmosphere, a purge-off operation which entails enrichment is prohibited and a purge-on operation which entails making the atmosphere lean is allowed. Conversely, when the present output voltage of the sub O.sub.2 sensor is not greater than .alpha., indicating a lean atmosphere, a purge-on operation which entails making the atmosphere lean is prohibited and a purge-off operation which entails enrichment is allowed.
