An LCD device has a reflective area that reflects light incident from a polarizing film side using a reflection film, and a transmissive area that transmits light of a backlight incident from a TFT substrate side. The drive voltages of the reflective area and transmissive area are Vr and Vt, the black voltage in the reflective area is Vr (K), the black voltage in the transmissive area is Vt (K). The reflectance R, the transmittance T, characteristics of R with respect to drive voltage [Vr (K)&#x2212;Vr] and characteristics of T with respect to drive voltage [Vt&#x2212;Vt (K)] substantially match each other.

Transflective type LCD device having excellent image quality

To suppress light leakage at the time of dark state, and to provide a liquid crystal display device whose electrodes in the reflection areas can be formed with high precision. The liquid crystal display device has a reflection area within a pixel unit by corresponding at least to a reflection plate forming part, and the reflection area is driven with a lateral electric field mode and normally-white. A driving electrode for forming an electric field to a liquid crystal layer of the reflection area is formed on the reflection plate via an insulating film by using a non-transparent electric conductor.

Angle &#x3b8;between the direction of the optical axis of the LC layer and the polarized direction of the light entering the LC layer satisfies the relationship: 0 degree&#x3c;&#x3b8;&#x3c;45 degrees. The resultant LCD device has lower leakage light and coloring.

Transflective liquid-crystal-display device with single retardation film between half-waveplate and liquid crystal layer

A transflective liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal film and a polarizing plate on a backlight source side. A transflective liquid crystal display device includes an uniaxially anisotropic film (a quarter wave plate) and a polarizing plate on a visual confirmation side. The liquid crystal film has the nematic hybrid orientation, in which a polymeric liquid crystal substance formed in a liquid state is fixed. The optical axis of the anisotropic film is disposed to be orthogonal or substantially orthogonal to that of the liquid crystal film.

Transflective liquid crystal display device

An LCD device includes a reflective area in each pixel. A reflection film having a convex-concave surface is provided in the reflective area, film in cross section configuration is formed. Each pixel includes a pixel electrode and a common electrode for applying a lateral electric field on a LC layer. The inclination angle of the reflection film has an inclination angle distribution, wherein the angle component in an area corresponding to the electrodes has a lower angle distribution than the angle components in an area corresponding to a gap between adjacent two of the electrodes.

It is to suppress the interference of the reflected light easily and securely even in a highly fine liquid crystal display device. The reflection plate comprises recessed or protruded parts and a reflection film formed over the recessed or protruded parts. A unit shape of the recessed or protruded parts is a polygon, an arbitrary point other than a centroid of the polygon that constitutes the recessed or protrude part is placed at a position that meets with an orderly-mannered lattice point as an origin, and each of the unit-shape polygons is arranged at a position that is rotated randomly with respect to the origin.

Method for manufacturing a reflection plate

A liquid crystal display device includes an array of pixels each including a plurality of sub-pixels, a plurality of pixel electrodes disposed in the respective sub-pixels, and a plurality of common electrodes disposed in the respective sub-pixels. The common electrode disposed in each of the sub-pixels in one of the pixels on each row is connected to the common electrodes disposed in the corresponding sub-pixels in the others of the pixels on the each row, to form a group of common electrodes connected together.

A transflective liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a first substrate with an array of switching elements and a second substrate with a black matrix so as to form a first area for a normally black display and a second area for a normally white display A first electric potential difference formed between the black matrix and both of the first common electrode and the first pixel electrode formed in the first area on the first substrate is made to be smaller than a larger one of the second electric potential difference formed between the black matrix and both of the second common electrode and the second pixel electrode formed in the second area.
