A backlight has light sources , a flat-plate-shaped light guide plate for guiding the light emitted from the light sources in a predetermined direction, a light shield louver , disposed so as to face the light guide plate , for shielding part of the light emerging from the light guide plate according to angles of incidence, and a prism sheet for converting the brightness distribution of the light incident on the light shield louver into a predetermined brightness distribution. Owing to the prism sheet , the light incident on the light shield louver exhibits a brightness distribution such that brightness is at a minimum at an angle of incidence of 0&deg;. Thus, the backlight , and a liquid crystal display device employing it, permits light to emerge therefrom within a desired range of viewing angles while offering high brightness within that range, with reduced degradation of viewability.

A backlighting device including: a light guide unit formed as a substantially flat panel of a first resin material having opposing surfaces and side faces, the light guide unit having a light guide section, wherein light enters the light guide unit through at least one of the side faces and is emitted from one of the opposing surfaces; and a light source element disposed adjacent to the at least one side face of the light guide section for irradiating light onto the at least one side face of the light guide section. A controllable auto-heating type heat source is located at a periphery of a light source and light reflecting layers are placed between the light source and the controllable auto-heating type heat source. Therefore, use of a temperature detector and a control circuit in order to control the heat source are unnecessary, so that thermal runaway of the heat source is avoided. Further, the light reflecting layers reflect the light irradiated from the light source, so that the amount of the beam of light shielded by the heat source is decreased.

A lighting apparatus for irradiating a liquid crystal display panel from the back includes a light guiding plate having at least an end which is bent in a direction opposite to the liquid crystal display panel, and a light source disposed on the back surface of the light guiding plate with respect to the liquid crystal display panel. Light from the light source is incident on the bent section of the light guiding plate, reflected by a reflector covering the outside surface of the bent section, and then falls on a section corresponding to a data display space of the liquid crystal display panel. This structure enables an increase in the ratio of the area of a light emitting section to the area of the entire lighting apparatus.

Lighting apparatus

A signal input electrode portion formed on a liquid crystal display panel which has driver LSIs outputting signals for driving picture elements is detachably inserted from a side direction thereof into and is connected to a connector mounted on a circuit board for supplying electric power and input signals to the liquid crystal display panel. The liquid crystal display panel is electrically connected with the circuit board through the connector.
