A method of preventing and treating dry spots on the grass surface of a golf course comprising the sprinkling of a mixture of a nonionic surfactant and a water soluble polymer on the grass surface. The development of dry spots on the grass surface of a golf course can be prevented and also already developed dry spots can be treated and reduced by this method.

An apparatus for use in a crystal manufacturing system based on a floating zone method or Czochralski method, adapted to control a quantity relating to the diameter of a crystal rod at the crystallization boundary, and designed to reduce hunting in the control of the quantity relating to the crystal diameter so as to prevent disturbance in crystallization and reduce irregularities in the surface of the crystal rod even if there is a discrepancy between a predetermined pattern and the ideal pattern with respect to the quantity to be controlled. The invention provides a method for surface-finishing of a single crystal wafer of a ferroelectric material into a substrate plate suitable for use, for example, as a SAW filter element which is mirror-polished only on one of the surfaces, the other surface having an adequate roughness. Different from conventional methods, the inventive method comprises the successive steps of (a) slicing a single crystal boule into wafers, (b) lapping of the wafer on both surfaces to impart adequate roughness to the surfaces, (c) chemically etching the thus lapped surfaces to remove the strain produced in the preceding mechanical working, and (d) mirror-polishing one of the thus etched surfaces so that high uniformity of the thickness and greatly decreased warping of the wafer can be ensured.

Method for the preparation of a ferroelectric substrate plate

The invention provides a novel method for the synthetic preparation of an .omega.-haloalkyne compound of the general formula R--C.tbd.C--CH.sub.2).sub.n X, in which X is a halogen atom, R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group and n is 4, 5 or 6, by the coupling reaction of a Grignard reagent RMgX' and an .omega.-halo-1-bromoalkyne compound of the formula X--CH.sub.2).sub.n C.tbd.C-Br. The .omega.-haloalkyne compound obtained in the above can be readily converted to the corresponding alkenyl acetate of the formula R--CH.dbd.CH--CH.sub.2).sub.n OCOCH.sub.3 by first acetylating and then partially hydrogenating in the presence of a Lindlar catalyst. In particular, 7, 11-hexadecadienyl acetate, which is a sexual pheromone compound of a noxious insect, is obtained in the same route of synthesis starting with the Grignard reagent of a 1-halo-3-octene and 1, 8-dibromo-1-octyne.

Alkynyl halide compounds and alkenyl acetate compounds therefrom

The invention provides a novel synthetic method for the preparation of an alkyne-1 compound of the general formula R(CH.sub.2).sub.n C.tbd.CH, in which R is a monovalent hydrocarbon group and n is an integer of 4, 5 or 6, which compound is useful as an intermediate of various organic compounds or, in particular, of several sexual pheromone of noxious insects expected to give a promising means for the extermination of the insects. The method comprises reacting an .omega.-bromo-1-alkyne compound of the formula Br(CH.sub.2).sub.n C.tbd.CH, e.g. 8-bromo-1-octyne, with a Grignard reagent of the formula RMgX, e.g. cis-3-octenylmagnesium chloride, in tetrahydrofuran, preferably, in the presence of a catalyst which is dilithium copper tetrachloride or lithium copper dichloride.

Method for the preparation of cis-11-hexadecen-1-yne

The invention provides a novel and efficient method for the synthetic preparation of cis-nonen-6-yl chloride which is a useful intermediate compound for the syntheses of, for example, cis-nonen-6-yl acetate, cis-nonen-6-ol, cis-nonen-6-al and the like as flavors as well as cis-dodecen-9-yl acetate and cis-tetradecen-11-yl acetate known as sexual pheromone compounds of several noxious insects. The inventive method comprises reacting 1-bromo-3-chloropropane with the Grignard reagent of cis-hexen-3-yl chloride which is a chlorination product of cis-hexen-3-ol known by a trivial name of leaf alcohol. The reaction is preferably carried out in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of a catalyst which may be lithium copper dichloride or dilithium copper tetrachloride at 0.degree. to 40.degree. C.

Method for the preparation of cis-nonen-6-yl chloride

The invention provides a novel and improved method for the preparation of a sodium salt of a 1-alkyne of the general formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each a hydrogen atom or a monovalent hydrocarbon group free from aliphatic unsaturation, by the reaction of a corresponding 1,2-alkadiene with metallic sodium in an inert organic solvent. According to the invention, the metallic sodium is dispersed in the inert solvent as finely as possible to have a particle diameter not exceeding 1000 .mu.m so as that the reaction velocity is very much increased even under atmospheric pressure to give an improved yield of the product.

The invention provides a novel method for the cis to trans isomerization of an alkenyl alcohol in a very simple process. The inventive method comprises heating the cis-isomer at a temperature of, for example, 150.degree. to 200.degree. C. in the presence of selenium metal in a powdery form with agitation.

A novel compound cis-6-undecene-1-chloride is prepared by reacting cis-3-octene-1-chloride with metallic magnesium to give a Grignard reagent of the chloride and then reacting the Grignard reagent with 1-bromo-3-chloropropane in the presence of a lithium copper chloride as a catalyst. The inventive compound is a useful intermediate compound for the synthetic preparation of several kinds of so-called sexual pheromone compounds of noxious insects. As an example of such sexual pheromone compounds, the synthetic preparation of cis-9-tetradecenyl acetate is described.

Cis-6-undecene-1-chloride and a method for the preparation thereof

The invention provides a novel class of organic compounds 1-halo-4-decene as a useful intermediate for the synthesis of cis-6-heneicosen-11-one which is a promising exterminating chemical of the noxious insect Douglas-fir tussock moth in North American forests acting as a sexual pheromone. The synthetic procedures for the synthetic preparation of the above 1-halo-4-decene are also described.

1-Halo-4-decene compounds

A novel class of tetrahydropyran-5-one compounds are provided which are 2-alkoxy- or 2-acyloxy-3,4-dihalogeno-6-alkyl tetrahydropyran-5-ones expressed by the general formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is an alkyl group, R.sup.2 is an alkyl or an acyloxy group and X is a halogen atom. The compounds are synthesized by the reaction of a 2-furyl carbinol compound with a halogen in the presence of an alcohol or a carboxylic acid. The compounds are useful as an intermediate for the synthetic preparation of various useful compounds including maltol as a flavor.

Tetrahydropyran-5-one compounds

Hexyn-3-ol-1 is prepared by the steps of (1) reaction of a methyl magnesium halide with propargyl chloride to form an ethylacetylene magnesium halide, (2) addition reaction of ethylene oxide to the ethylacetylene magnesium halide to form a halogen magnesium salt of hexyn-3-ol-1, and (3) hydrolysis of the halogeno magnesium salt of hexyn-3-ol-1.
