The storage system includes a host computer; a management computer coupled to the host computer; a first storage device coupled to the host computer and the management computer, and including first port management information; and a second storage device coupled to the host computer, the management computer and the first storage device, and including second port management information. The first port management information and the second port management information include an identifier of a port on each storage device, an identifier of a volume in each storage device, an access restriction and an identifier of a port permitted access from the host computer to each storage device.

Access restriction information that an old storage device has is transferred to a new storage device. A management serverobtains a port management TLthat the old storage devicehas, through a LANwhich is separated from a Fiber Channel network which is utilized for data communication. Also, through the LAN, a port list TLis obtained from the new storage device. And, then, on the basis of the port list TL, a port of the new storage device, which is utilized for an access to a volume of the old storage device, is selected. And, on the basis of the port management TL, on a port of the selected new storage device, it is set up that access restriction information of a port of the old storage deviceto which a volume, of which the port is utilized for an access, is assigned.

A managing computer (manager) manages replication of data areas inside a storage or among storages. A storage volume management module of the manager manages policy of the volume and its properties. When replication of a volume is set, a volume of a replication destination appropriate for a volume of a replication source is generated using the policy and the properties to form a replication pair. A route management module of the manager and its volume management module bring the policy and the properties of the volumes, and the policies and conditions of lines into conformity with one another. When any fault occurs in a line route used for data transfer during replication of the volume, a separate line route is utilized, and a fault countermeasure is taken for replication of the volumes in accordance with the policy and properties of the volumes.

An identifier analyzing unit creates an identifier path from each computer to a storage device. A setting judgment unit judges whether this identifier path is independent of, or shared by, identifier paths of the other computers. According to the judgment, instead of using a network identifier of the computer, a setting execution unit uses, for information settings, an identifier of a port on the low-order side of the protocol-conversion-type router or a logical identifier that is generated.

A plurality of storage devices connected to at least one host computer via a network is to be managed. Access information about accesses from the host computer to each of the storage devices is referred to; a storage area in the storage device that has low access efficiency is determined based on the access information; a host computer having low access efficiency in view of the storage area having low access efficiency is determined based on the access information; a storage area having high access efficiency at least from the host computer having low access efficiency is determined; and data that is stored in the storage area having low access efficiency and used by the host computer having low access efficiency is transferred to the storage area having high access efficiency.
