A color processing device performs a quantitative evaluation not influenced by the experience and sensitivity of a user, upon adjustment of a profile. The adjustment of first conversion data for converting device independent data included in a profile describing characteristics of a device into device dependent data is achieved by inputting sample data, which is the device independent data, converting the sample data into the device dependent data using the first conversion data, converting the converted device dependent data into the device independent data using second conversion data which is conversion data included in the profile and which is conversion data for converting the device dependent data into the device independent data, and calculating the color difference between the sample data and the device independent data.

An image which has been color-converted in correspondence with the output characteristics of a printing press as a target for the purpose of proof may often be printed by a copying machine or printer. Prior to the proof, a generation history of a generated profile of an output device is preferably managed. The operator sets whether or not to save parameters (saving location and profile name) associated with saving of a file and colorimetric values, whether or not to save history management information, and the like.

In some cases, an image that has undergone color conversion in correspondence with the output characteristics of a printing press as a target is printed using a copying machine or printer for the purpose of proof. Prior to such proof, an output device profile is generated. In this case, it is desired to easily confirm and tune the generated profile. According to this invention, tuning images to be proofed and chart images before and after color conversion are parallelly displayed as independent windows. An arbitrary color range to be tuned is selected on one of these windows, a tuning parameter is set for the selected color range, and a color conversion condition is tuned based on the tuning parameter.

Upon reading an A3-size sample image, a colorimeter that can read A3 size can be used but such A3-size calorimeter is expensive. For this reason, an A3-size recording paper sheet is cut into halves, i.e., two A4-size sample images, which are measured by an A4-size calorimeter. To prevent such troublesome operation, color patches are divided into nearly half groups, and these color patch groups are printed on an A3-size recording paper sheet to have their top positions on the opposite sides. In this way, after one color patch group is measured, the sample image is rotated through 180&#xb0; and is set on the calorimeter to measure the other color patch group.
