A part of the elements discovered in a network are chosen to be monitored, and a user such as a network administrator is allowed to appropriately monitor desired elements. A network management server collects information on elements in the network, and displays collected information on a GUI screen. The user is allowed to choose an element based on the information displayed on the screen, and the element chosen by the user is then registered as an object to be monitored. Information is collected including elements which are not registered, and displayed on the screen along with a result of comparison to the registered elements.

The monitoring apparatus also comprises a storing unit that stores state information based on the collected LSP path information, and a display unit that reads the state information for a selected LSP stored by the storing unit and graphically displays a path of the selected LSP, in accordance with a user's instruction.

An information presentation apparatus acquires traffic information regarding a traffic specified in accordance with a user's instruction, where the traffic information has been collected from one or more routers located at a border of the network to be managed. The router transmits a second message for resource reservation based on the first message to the first node, when the correspondence relationship can be stored. Router apparatus and method of using a virtual connection to transfer a packet

A scheme for sharing a common virtual connection identifier between end-nodes, which enable sharing of a common identifier of a sufficient information length at both end-nodes of a virtual connection. In this scheme, the first message containing a first identifier for provisionally identifying a virtual connection commonly between neighboring nodes is exchanged between neighboring nodes, at a time of setting up the virtual connection. A mechanism for performing multicast packet transfer when a certain one of the destination nodes participating in the multicast communication requires resource reservation for a certain packet flow specified among the packet flows to that destination node. A system may transfer multicast packets using a plurality of virtual connections based on which flow the packets to be transferred belong to, so that each node receives the packets without duplication. Alternatively, a system may selectively discard received packets to avoid processing duplicated packets, although duplicated packets are received at each node.

A packet transfer scheme for transferring packets at a boundary of a plurality networks is disclosed. A network interconnection apparatus (router) communicates with a previous hop node in one of the plurality of networks by a first control message including a first identification information for identifying an upstream path from the previous hop node and a specification information for specifying a group of packets to be transferred on the upstream path, and with a next hop node in another of the plurality of networks by a second control message including a second identification information for identifying a downstream path to the next hop node and a specification information for specifying a group of packets to be transferred on the downstream path.
