A disk unit for reading information from or writing information to a disk by means of a head supported by an actuator includes a shroud having a face perpendicular to a surface of the disk and opposing a peripheral edge of the disk, and a spoiler having a given height in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the disk and extending above the surface of the disk from the peripheral edge generally toward a center of the disk.

A carriage arm and a hard disk drive unit including the carriage arm, where the carriage arm includes a head slider mounting part and a voice coil attachment part integrally formed with each other by a metal plate being press punched so that the head slider mounting part and the voice coil attachment part are arranged opposite to each other with respect to a rotational axis of the carriage arm. A disk drive includes a disk rotatably mounted in a housing, the disk having a plurality of tracks, a head for reading/writing data on the disk, and an actuator for moving the head across the tracks of the disk. The disk drive further includes a breathing filter fixed to the inner surface of a cover of the housing so as to close a breathing hole formed through the cover, and a breathing filter protecting member fixed to the outer surface of the cover so as to close the breathing hole and allow ventilation.

Magnetic disk apparatus with visco elastic shock dampening

A magnetic disk drive for locking an actuator mounted with a magnetic head in a safety zone. The magnetic disk drive comprises a magnet, fixed yoke members and a stopper for setting a stop position of rotations of the rotary actuator in such a position that torque by the fixed yoke members and the magnet is maximized. The fixed yoke members form a magnetic circuit for the magnet in all or a part of a movable range of the rotary actuator. The fixed yoke members include a first area having a gap width uniformly reduced in a lock direction to retract the rotary actuator and a second area having a gap width smaller than a gap width of the first area. The fixed yoke members are mechanically separated from each other. The fixed yoke members further include a second area having a minimum gap width to lock the rotary actuator, a first area having such a gap that a gap width becomes smaller as it approaches the second area and a third area formed between the second area and the first area and having a gap width larger than a gap width of the second area.

Magnetic disk drive with automatic actuator and locking structure

Disclosed is a magnetic disk apparatus which protects magnetic disks against external and internal magnetic fields and electromagnetic waves. This magnetic disk apparatus comprises at least one magnetic disk; rotation unit for rotating the magnetic disk; a magnetic head for recording and reproducing information on and from the magnetic disk; an actuator for supporting the magnetic head and moving the magnetic head to a given position on the magnetic disk; and an enclosure for covering those individual components. According to one aspect of this invention, the enclosure is made of a ferromagnetic material. According to another aspect of this invention, the enclosure is made of a non-magnetic material and a shield layer made of a ferromagnetic material is provided at least in that region of an inner wall of the enclosure which corresponds to the movable range of the magnetic head. According to a further aspect of this invention, this apparatus further comprises a circuit board provided on the inner wall of the enclosure, circuitry for accomplishing magnetic recording and reproduction being mounted on the circuit board, and a shield layer provided between the enclosure and the circuit board. According to a still further aspect of this invention, this apparatus further comprises a circuit board provided on the inner wall of the enclosure, circuitry for accomplishing magnetic recording and reproduction being mounted on the circuit board, and a conductive shield member provided between the magnetic disk and the circuit board.

Magnetic disk apparatus

Disclosed are a spindle motor for rotating a disk and a magnetic disk apparatus using this motor. This spindle motor comprises: a spindle shaft secured to a housing for the disk apparatus; a spindle hub including a flange having its bottom surface to which an inner peripheral surface of said disk is fixed and rotatably attached to the spindle shaft; a ring-like permanent magnet fitted to the spindle hub; a plurality of stators attached in concentric positions in face-to-face relationship with the ring-like permanent magnet; and a plurality of armature coils wound on each of the stators. With this construction, an internal space of the spindle hub can be enlarged, and, therefore, a diameter of the permanent magnet can be increased. Besides, the number of windings of the armature coil can be also increased. This leads to an increment in torque constant, and the motor of lower dissipation power is attainable.
