A first member formed of a thermoplastic resin molding mixed with a fiber material and a second member formed of a molding containing at least a thermoplastic resin are welded by friction stir spot welding using a double-acting tool for friction stir spot welding. An overlapping part between the first member and the second member is formed, and the tool is disposed against the overlapping part while the pin and the shoulder are rotated about the rotation axis. The pin is plunged into the overlapping part, and friction stir is performed to cause extension fibers to remain around a plunging region of the pin while the shoulder is retracted to release an overflow material. The shoulder is brought closer to the overlapping part to wrap the extension fibers into the overflow material when the overflow material is backfilled while the pin is retracted from the overlapping part.

Friction stir spot welding method and welded assembly utilizing same

A friction stir welding apparatus is used at a butted portion where a second workpiece is butted against a first workpiece such that the second workpiece is upright on the first workpiece. The friction stir welding apparatus includes: a rotary tool that is plunged into one inner corner of a pair of inner corners that are positioned, at the butted portion, on both sides of the second workpiece, respectively; an inner corner presser that presses the other inner corner of the pair of inner corners; and a mover that moves the rotary tool and the inner corner presser along a direction in which the butted portion extends. The inner corner presser includes a pressing roller that presses the other inner corner while rolling in a state where the inner corner presser is being moved by the mover.

Friction stir welding apparatus and friction stir welding method

A friction stir spot welding device which welds an object to be welded, by softening the object by friction heat and by stirring the object, has a tool with a cylindrical shape, the tool being rotatable around an axis thereof, advanceable along a direction of the axis, and retractable along the direction of the axis, a temperature detector which detects a temperature of the tool when a welding step for the object starts, and a controller configured to compare the temperature of the tool which is detected by the temperature detector to a predetermined reference temperature to set a plunging force applied by the tool to press the object.

A friction stir spot welding apparatus includes a pin member, a shoulder member, a rotation driver, a forward/backward movement driver, and a controller. The controller controls the forward/backward movement driver, such that the pin member and/or the shoulder member press workpieces before a clamp member presses the workpieces, and then controls the rotation driver and the forward/backward movement driver, such that the pin member and the shoulder member stir the workpieces.
