A liquid crystal display device comprises a base substrate including a display region, and a drive circuitry region provided in a surrounding region of the display region, a liquid crystal layer, and a counter substrate facing the base substrate via the liquid crystal layer. A pixel electrode and a pixel driving element for driving the pixel electrode are provided in the display region, a driving circuitry section for controlling the pixel electrode and the pixel driving element is provided in the drive circuitry region. An insulating layer is provided to cover at least one portion of the drive circuitry region. A common transition electrode is provided in the insulating layer. The common transition electrode is electrically connected to a counter electrode provided on the counter substrate.

Liquid crystal display device

An active matrix substrate includes: pixel electrodes for display which are disposed in a matrix; active elements for controlling input and output of signals to the pixel electrodes; a driving circuit unit for scanning signals for controlling ON and OFF operation of the active elements in a sequential manner; and a driving circuit unit for data signals for inputting and outputting data to the pixel electrodes via the active elements. A clock signal line in at least one of the driving circuit unit for scanning signals and the driving circuit unit for data signals is formed from a thin metal film for scanning signal lines, and a constant voltage line is formed from a thin metal film for data signal lines.

Active matrix substrate and method for fabricating the same

An active matrix substrate including: pixel electrodes provided in a matrix; a TFT composed essentially of a semiconductor layer; a scanning signal line; a data signal line; a conductive light-shielding film formed on a substrate; a first insulating film formed on the substrate so as to cover the conductive light-shielding film; a thin semiconductor film formed on the first insulating film, the thin semiconductor film being formed of the same material as the semiconductor layer composing the TFT; a second insulating film formed on the first insulating film so as to cover the thin semiconductor film; and a storage capacitance electrode formed on the second insulating film. The storage capacitance electrode is a thin metal film formed of the same material as the scanning signal line. The storage capacitance electrode is electrically coupled to the conductive light-shielding film. A first storage capacitance is formed between the conductive light-shielding film and the thin semiconductor film. A second storage capacitance is formed between the storage capacitance electrode and the thin semiconductor film. The storage capacitance electrode at least partially overlaps the data signal line.

Active matrix substrate with the double layered structure

An insulated gate TFT (thin film transistor) liquid crystal pixel device driving circuit includes a supplemental capacitive element (condenser) that has the following two insulating films that is sandwiched between one electrode made of non-single crystal (semi-conductive) silicon and another electrode made of a conductor: (1) an insulating silicon-oxide film; (2) an insulating film made of the same material that was used for insulating the gate of the pixel TFT. The supplemental capacitive element is specifically provided with a thicker insulating film portion compared to that of the pixel TFT. Consequently, if the TFT gate insulating film is somehow subsequently thinned, the supplemental capacitive element is less susceptible to the occurrence of defects such as pin holes or the like. As a result, not only is the performance of the pixel TFTs upgraded, but also the reliability of the associated supplemental capacitive elements is increased. Thus, the method and apparatus in accordance with the present invention makes it possible to provide an inexpensive liquid crystal display device having improved performance over conventional TFTs combined with a greater reliability and an increased resistance of the supplemental capacitive elements to voltage spikes or the like.

Liquid crystal display device and method for manufacturing same

A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a first substrate, a second substrate having a counter electrode, and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrates. The first substrate includes: a plurality of pixel electrodes arranged in a matrix; a plurality of source bus lines for transmitting a plurality of data signals, each data line being disposed between columns of the plurality of pixel electrodes; a plurality of active elements for electrically connecting each of the plurality of pixel electrodes to its adjacent source bus line and thereby feeding the plurality of data signals to the plurality of pixel electrodes; and a plurality of gate bus lines for transmitting scanning signals for controlling the plurality of active elements so as to be in a conductive or non-conductive state, each gate bus line being disposed between rows of the plurality of pixel electrodes. The plurality of transmitted data signals are each held by parasitic capacitances of the plurality of source bus lines. The counter electrode has a plurality of apertures, and at least one of the plurality of apertures is disposed in a region opposed to the plurality of source bus lines.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

A parasitic capacitance is not caused between a shielding film and a gate line and between a pixel electrode and the gate line in a liquid crystal display of the present invention because the shielding film and the pixel electrode do not overlap the gate lines. The display characteristics are thus improved. Furthermore, since the counter shielding film is formed so as to cover a smaller gap of one between the shielding film and the gate line and one between the gate line and pixel electrode, light leak through the gap can be blocked. The shielding film can be small because it only covers the gap, thereby preventing a degradation of an aperture ratio. Moreover, a degradation of yield caused by increasing a number of production steps is also prevented because the production steps are not complicated. In another aspect of the liquid crystal display of the present invention, since the gate line is electrically connected to a counter electrode, a part of the parasitic capacitance caused between the pixel electrode and the shielding film end between the pixel electrode and the gate line is connected in parallel to a capacitance of liquid crystal and used as a storage capacitance. As a result, the parasitic capacitance less influences on the display characteristics, which is thus further improved. Further, since storage capacitance lines are not required, the aperture rate is not degraded and a degradation of yield caused by increasing a number of the production steps is prevented.
