A marine outboard drive lower unit forward, neutral, reverse transmission including an arrangement for taking forward and reverse thrust directly from the propulsion shaft by pairs of thrust bearings that act on oppositely facing thrust surfaces formed by the propeller shaft. A single coil compression spring preloads both of the bearings.

An ignition control system for an internal combustion engine which includes a microcomputer which operates to control the ignition timing in response to engine speed and engine temperature signals individually and in preselected combination with an engine air flow signal and/or a lubricant level signal during predetermined engine running conditions. These predetermined running conditions include low speed, warm up, overhead, cruising, and overspeed engine running conditions, as well as a low lubricant level condition. The ignition control system is also capable of detecting and responding to abnormal combustion running conditions and setting and optimum spark advance during the starting of the engine.

In addition, the electronic components are mounted on a circuit board and the mounting of the circuit board relative to the engine is in such a direction that the vibrations generated by the outboard motor are less likely to damage the electronic module.

Two embodiments of hydraulic control systems for outboard drives that permit the motor to pop up when an underwater obstacle is struck and return to its normal condition once the obstacle is cleared under a controlled force. Each embodiment includes a simplified arrangement wherein the motor may be raised from a normal running condition to a shallow water trim position and will be held hydraulically in the shallow water position. Each embodiment also permits popping up of the motor from the shallow water position when an underwater obstacle is struck. In one embodiment, the motor is permitted to return to the shallow water position once the obstacle is cleared whereas in the other embodiment, the motor returns to its normal condition once the underwater obstacle is cleared.

Tilt locking system for boat propellers

A two cycle loop scavenging engine of the crankcase precompression type having a pair of equally dimensioned scavenging passages 14, 16 disposed in a cylinder block 10 behind an apertured cylinder line 12. The passages are symmetrically positioned on opposite sides of a vertical plane A including the cylinder axis and oriented at an angle .theta. to a plane normal to the crankshaft 17. Recessed notches 22, 23 in the lower periphery of the piston skirt 20a mate with notches 12e, 12f, respectively, in the bottom of the cylinder liner at the entrances to scavenging passages 14, 16 at the bottom of each piston stroke. The notches 22, 23 have unequal cross-sectional areas to compensate for unequal fuel mixture pressures at the scavenging passage entrances caused by the rotation of the crankweb 17a, thereby producing a more uniform fuel mixture distribution in the cylinder.
