Described are techniques for customizing a help system. A help system may be received providing help for a product. A proficiency level for a user may be determined in accordance with one or more proficiency criteria including one or more previous interactions of the user with any of the help system and performing an operation using a non-help feature of the product. A customized help system for the user may be determined for the user in accordance with the proficiency level for the user, wherein the customized help system is a modified version of the help system.

Adaptive help system

Described are techniques for performing data storage management operations. A graphical user interface display includes multiple each associated with a tiering preference. The graphical user interface includes multiple user interface elements representing a plurality of logical devices. Each user interface element denotes a logical device located in one of the plurality of areas to thereby indicate any of a tiering preference and a tiering requirement for the logical device. First processing is performed to modify a tiering preference for a first logical device where the first processing includes selecting the first logical device by selecting a user interface element representing the first logical device, and moving the first user interface element from a first of the areas, denoting a first tiering preference, to a second of the area, denoting a second tiering preference.

A method includes (a) receiving from several different storage systems, several discovery packets, each different type of system having a different minimal amount of configuration information required to initialize, (b) displaying an identifier for each system from which a discovery packet was received, (c) receiving a selection of a particular system, (d) determining which type of system the selected system is, each type being associated with a distinct set of initialization parameter selection choices reflecting the minimal amount of configuration information required to initialize a system of that type, (e) displaying the initialization parameter selection choices associated with the determined type of system, (f) receiving initialization parameter selections responsive to the displayed initialization parameter selection choices, and (g) sending an initialization command to the selected particular system including the received initialization parameter selections to allow the selected particular system to be properly initialized.

Described are methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer program products for determining and managing the dependencies of components of a storage system. Storage system object data for a plurality of storage system objects on a storage system is received by a management server. A plurality of logical dependencies are determined by the management server based on the storage system object data, where each logical dependency reflects a dependency between at least two storage system objects of the plurality of storage system objects. A tree having a plurality of nodes and a plurality of edges is formed by the management server, where each edge connects a first node and a second node, the first node representing a first storage system object and the second node representing a second storage system object, and the edge representing a logical dependency between the first storage system object and the second storage system object.

Determining and managing dependencies in a storage system

Techniques for user interface customization of an application are described. A navigational structure file is received including a description of a hierarchical structure describing a navigational flow of the application. The hierarchical structure may include objects corresponding to different navigation points of the application whereby interaction with a user interface element causes transition or navigation from a first navigation point of the application to a second navigation point of the application as described in the hierarchical structure. It is determined whether any one of a defined set of one or more trigger conditions occurs. Responsive to determining an occurrence of a trigger condition in the defined set, first processing is performed in accordance with the trigger condition that has occurred to produce a customized user interface displayed to a user and to produce a customized navigational flow of the application.

Adaptive and special user interface modes

One embodiment is directed to a method performed by a computing device. The method includes (1) receiving a command from a user to display a current GUI page of a set of GUI pages on a client device, the set of GUI pages providing the user with control over a system, (2) selecting, with reference to a proficiency level associated with the user, a version of the current GUI page from a plurality of versions of the current GUI page, and (3) causing the selected version of the current GUI page to be displayed to the user on a display of the client device. Other embodiments are directed to a computerized apparatus and a computer program product for performing a method similar to that described above.

Proficiency-based GUI adaptation

A method is used in managing alert thresholds. An integrated slider settings dialog is provided. An existing setting for the severity of an alert threshold is displayed by the dialog. A user is allowed to view and change the setting for the severity of the alert threshold by hovering over a slider thumb.

Described are techniques for displaying data. A first set of data is received that includes a first plurality of objects at a first level in a hierarchy. At least some of the first plurality of objects are displayed on a user interface display. A first object is selected from the at least some of the first plurality of objects displayed on the user interface display. Responsive to selecting the first object, a second set of data is received that includes a second plurality of objects at a second level in the hierarchy. At least some of the second plurality of objects are displayed on the user interface display. The user interface display provides infinite scrolling of the first plurality of objects in a first portion of the user interface display and infinite scrolling of the second plurality of objects in a second portion of the user interface display.

Scalable hierarchical user interface display

Described are techniques for problem analysis. Notification is provided through a user interface regarding a performance problem of a system. A plurality of user interface displays are then displayed which correspond to a plurality of steps in connection with performing analysis of the performance problem. Each of the user interface displays includes a predefined set of one or more options. At least a first of the options in the predefined set corresponds to a recommended action automatically performed in response to selecting said first option of the predefined set.

Guided performance troubleshooting and exploration

A method for managing data storage system management applications includes executing, by a client device, a first data storage system management application, receiving, by the client device, an execution instruction for execution of a second data storage system management application, and detecting, by the client device, an installation of a second data storage system management application as part of the client device, the second data storage system management application being distinct from the first data storage system management application. If the second data storage system management application is installed on the client device, executing the second data storage system management application, otherwise retrieving the second data storage system management application from a server device and executing the second data storage system management application.
