A plurality of embodiments of mixing syringes are provided. Inventive key to all of the embodiments is a piston valve which divides a barrel to create a pair of chambers in which matter and liquid can be disparately and securely disposed before mixing. Each disclosed piston valve is actuated by force on an associated plunger rod which produces pressure within an associated syringe resulting in a change of the valve state from closed to open. In addition, each such valve comprises check valve action which is permissive to only distal flow through the syringe. Embodiments for both a basic mixing syringe and a mixing syringe with flush are disclosed. Considerations and methods for chamber filling without valve actuation are provided. A mixing syringe system with flush system utilizing a dual chamber syringe having a male luer fitting and a separate diluent containing vessel having a female luer fitting is also disclosed. In addition, a valve piston which comprises a proximally disposed skirt for providing an additional seal when the valve piston momentarily cants is disclosed. Further a valve piston, which comprises a plurality of rings, at least one of which is forced to further radially displace by a positive pressure differential applied against one of two opposing convex piston faces to thereby increase a seal between barrel wall and piston is disclosed.

Multiple chamber syringe piston and mixing devices

A dual-chamber syringe system is disclosed. Critical system oriented elements are disclosed, including plunger valve designs for accurate measurement and true, non-canting displacement; tamper and inadvertent valve actuation indicators, as well as, valve status indicators; anti-reflux construction; novel indicia patterns for dual-chamber syringe operation; structure and method for quality assurance that no gas can be delivered from a proximal chamber of the dual-chamber syringe and a kit for single step dose transfer. In addition, a tapered fitting valve is disclosed. The tapered fitting valve comprises a single molded incompressible, but supple part and a skeletal support whereby the tapered fitting valve is opened by insertion into a tapered fitting. The preferred embodiment of an actuator portion of the valve is elliptical in shape. The valve opens by compressing a slit which is parallel to, but offset from the major elliptical axis to provide sufficient space for other valve components within a limited size, such as that of a luer fitting. A syringe barrel comprising a skeletal support structure for an affixed valve for a tapered fitting is also disclosed.

Dual-chamber syringe and associated connecting systems

Methods and apparatus for employing an adhesive strap about a medical connection for improving connection integrity for greater safety and reliability and a cross contamination barrier for medical syringes is disclosed. Also, a shielding tube for a medical syringe which acts as a barrier against cross contamination across a syringe plunger is disclosed. The tube comprises a pattern of raised ribs inside to protect against potentially tube tearing edges of an associated plunger rod assembly and to provide a skid resistant surface when disposed about flanges of the syringe.

Methods for making and using a vial shielding convenience kit

A medical needle shield apparatus is provided which includes an extensible shield having a first segment and a second segment extending therefrom. The second segment includes an opening configured for clearance of a medical needle of a medical needle device during attachment of the extensible shield to the medical needle device. The second segment defines a planar surface adjacent a distal portion thereof. The planar surface is configured to engage the needle for disposing the shield in an extended position. In alternate embodiment, the medical needle shield apparatus has a syringe having a needle hub supporting a needle. The first segment articulates from a collar disposed about the needle hub. The collar includes a pair of latches. The opening is configured for travel about the needle to facilitate extension of the shield from a retracted position to an extended position. The second segment further includes a proximal fulcrum that engages the needle to facilitate extension of the shield. The second segment also has a pair of catches. The catches are engageable with the latches to maintain the shield in the retracted position. The second segment has a nose portion defining a planar surface configured to engage the needle to facilitate fixing the shield in the extended position.

Safety shield for medical needles

A retractable and extendable medical needle protective shield which provides opportunity for accessing and reaccessing a medical needle and associated sharpened needle tip and recovering the needle and tip for safety between accesses. The shield includes a needle guide which assures the needle tip is untouched by any part of the shield as the shield is displaced to cover and uncover the needle. A releasible latch is provided to guard against inadvertent removal of the protective shield between accesses. An unreleasible latch is also provided to secure the shield relative to the latch preparatory to final disposal. In combination with the protective shield, a plurality of adapters are disclosed which provide examples of passively operated, protected access to membrane pierceable fluid sources such as a &ldquo;Y&rdquo; connection site of an IV set line, a drug vial, a vacuum sample tube, an umbilical cord holder and a hypodermic site.

Reaccessible medical needle safety devices and methods

Disclosure of methods and apparatus providing bases for design of compact small bore medical needle retraction safety devices wherein actuators are displaced away from slender needle sheathing bodies to initiate a needle retraction cycle for safely containing a medical needle after use. Such actuation guards against inadvertent acts, such as depression of an actuator, which may result in untimely needle retraction. Four embodiments of the instant invention are disclosed. In one embodiment, needle retracting energy is stored as a medical needle is extended for use and is expended to retract the needle into safe containment. Other embodiments comprise power assist mechanisms which store energy during an initial phase of needle retraction to be used to enhance and assist needle retraction during a needle retraction completing phase. In some embodiments, retraction is facilitated by a pair of rigid, elongated, hingedly interconnected arms which are further hingedly coupled to a needle hub assembly and to a device body such that one arm is rotated approximately 180&deg; to retract the needle a distance greater than the length of the so rotated arm to facilitate retraction actuation. One power assist mechanism comprises a part molded as a distortable member of one of the arms. To realize low cost manufacture, the operating device can be made from as few as two injection molded parts. A readily viewable, blood flash chamber permits early detection of needle entry into a blood vessel.

In-line retractable safety medical needle assembly

Disclosure of methods and apparatus providing bases for design of compact catheter insertion needle retraction safety devices wherein actuators are displaced away from slender needle sheathing bodies to initiate a needle retraction cycle for safely containing a catheter insertion needle after use. Such actuation guards against inadvertent acts, such as depression of an actuator, which may result in untimely needle retraction. Four embodiments of the instant invention are disclosed. In one embodiment, needle retracting energy is stored as a catheter insertion needle is extended for use and is expended to retract the needle into safe containment.
