Method and system for determining spin pad length in a data storage system. The data storage system has a data storage medium having at least one track for storing a plurality of data sections, a timing reference mark for the at least one track, and a recording head for writing the plurality of data sections on and for reading the plurality of data sections from the data storage medium. The data storage system further has a spin pad length determining mechanism for determining the length of a spin pad to be written on the at least one track as a function of distance from the timing reference mark during an operation of writing a data section on the at least one track. By writing spin pads of proper length on the at least one track, the total space occupied by the spin pads on the at least one track is minimized, thus providing additional space to store data.

A data storage device exhibiting reduced pad regions includes a read/write channel to convert transduced waveforms from a storage medium into recovered digital information. The recovered digital information is communicated from the read/write channel to a controller. The read/write channel includes an analog stage and a digital stage, which function independently. While the digital stage is engaged in the task of recovering servo data, the analog stage may be engaged in the task of recovering user data. Initially, the controller generates a control signal commanding the read/write channel to read and recover servo data. In the wake of the last unit of servo data having been processed by the analog stage of the read/write channel, the controller commands the read/write channel to read user data from the disc. Therefore, the analog stage of the read/write channel reads user data, while the digital stage finishes processing the servo data.

Method and apparatus for transferring data to and from a data storage medium, such as a rotatable disc in a data storage device. The medium includes a data sector field with a physical length sufficient to store a first data block at a first write frequency. A compression engine compresses the first data block to provide a reduced size, compressed data block. The compressed data block is then written to the data sector field at a second write frequency less than the first write frequency so that the written compressed data block occupies substantially the physical length of said data sector field. This achieves a decreased linear bit density and tends to increase communication channel signal to noise (SNR) ratios and reduce error rates. Data slipping is further advantageously employed so that the first data block further stores at least a portion of a second compressed data block.

Using data compression to achieve lower linear bit densities on a storage medium

A method and apparatus for detecting and respond to low-amplitude-write/skip-write events in a disc drive. The invention involves characterizing the gain factor of a variable gain amplifier embedded in the read path of a disc drive during at least two instances in which the read head passes over a servo sector, prior to a write event. Next the write event is executed. After the write event, the gain factor employed by the variable gain amplifier is acquired as the read head passes over the following servo sector. Finally, the acquired gain factor is compared to the characterization in order to detect a low-amplitude-write/skip-write event.
