An optical communication system is designed to suppress the generation of cross talk even in the case of small wavelength spacing and high bit-rate modulation. An Nth order harmonic generating device where N is an integer of 2 or larger is positioned before a demultiplexer to upconver the frequency or down convert the wavetlength of the light wave by N times. The frequency spacing between the carriers is increased and allows easier separation of the optical signal and permits denser WDM channels and/or higher data rate per channel. An optical circuit is designed with demultiplexing and optical detection functionality with minimal crosstalk. An Nth order harmonic generation device is positioned before the demultiplexer to either convert the frequency or down convert the wavelength of the demultiplexed light wave by N-times. Upconverting the multiplexed signal at the receiver station is performed by either simultaneously upconverting N-times to create N times the original spacing between each optical channel or by upconverting the frequency of one optical channel at a time.

A self-scanning light-emitting device is provided in which the amounts of light of light-emitting elements may be corrected to make the distribution of amounts of light in a luminescent chip or among luminescent chips uniform. The correction for amounts of light of light-emitting elements may be carried out by regulating the time duration of on-state of a light-emitting element or the voltage of a write signal applied to a light-emitting element. According to the present invention, the distribution of amounts of light becomes uniform, so that the printing quality of a printer using such self-scanning light-emitting device is improved.

A self scanning light-emitting array is disclosed. A coupled array of light-emitting elements is constituted so that a light-emitting element in a minimal conducting state influences the next light-emitting element so that its threshold level is changed. When each element is driven by a common clock pulse, the change in threshold level is shifted in the longitudinal direction, so that a minimal conducting state is transferred in a clock period of the clock pulse.

Self-scanning light-emitting array

A self-scanning light-emitting element array is disclosed. A coupled array of light-emitting elements is constituted so that a light-emitting element which is turned on influences a light-emitting element to be turned on next so that its threshold level is changed. When each element is clock-driven by a common drive pulse, the change in threshold level is shifted in the array direction, so that a turn-on operation is transferred in a clock period of the drive pulse.
