A panel distribution system includes a plurality of panel delivery units disposed on a panel conveyance line for forcing out panels in a lateral direction from the conveyance line. The delivery units are all operative to allow the passage of the panels through them except one located closer to a downstream end of the conveyance line. A plurality of loading conveyor units having a two-storied construction composed of a pair of overlapping upper and lower loading conveyors can be disposed on the same side of the conveyance line and held in alignment with the corresponding delivery units. This concentrated high-density arrangement of the loading conveyors can make considerable reductions in floor space of the entire system with a minimum dead space involved. In one preferred form, the panel conveyance line extending from a transfer press and the upper and lower loading conveyors are aligned with each other, so that a further reduction in size of the entire system is possible. Since the panels while being conveyed are not subjected to a directional change and hence free from displacement, the panel loading work can be achieved easily and reliably. According to a panel distribution method of the invention, the storage density of baskets used can be increased by a properly handling procedure provided for a few odd panels.

A press machine includes at least one mobile bolster movable with respect to the press machine, a plurality of die assemblies mounted on the mobile bolster and arranged in a row at equal intervals, a plurality of handling bars for transferring a plurality of workpieces successively through the die assemblies, one or more workpiece holders detachably mounted on each of the handling bars for holding the workpieces, feed bars for moving the handling bars, lifting/lower units for vertically moving the feed bars, and handling bar gripping devices for gripping the handling bars. A method of changing the workpiece holders comprises the steps of gripping the handling bars with the handling bar gripping devices, releasing the feed bars from the handling bars, elevating the feed bars beyond the die assemblies with the lifting/lowering units, moving the mobile bolster out of the press machine, and detaching the workpiece holders from the handling bars and replacing the workpiece holders with new workpiece holders.

A transfer system for moving workpieces between a plurality of processing stations in sequential order. A pair of guide rails extend in a workpiece transferring direction on opposed sides of the stations and are movable up and down by a driving mechanism. A plurality of arm carriages are movable along the guide rails and are joined to one another by longitudinally extending connecting bars. A plurality of handling arms extend laterally between opposed pairs of the carriages. All of the arm carriages are moved as a group by a carriage driving mechanism. Auxiliary guide rails can be fixed to the carriages extending in parallel with the main guide rails. The handling arms can be movable longitudinally along the auxiliary guide rails. Rack and pinion mechanisms can be mounted on the arm carriages and the handling arms and interconnected with each other so as to drive each pair of arms in opposite directions.
