A system and method for widening auto-ignition range of a lean burn internal combustion engine employs stratified charge of exhaust gas content and air content. A fuel injection system carries out a first injection of gasoline fuel for dispersion within the air content, and a second injection of gasoline fuel for dispersion within the exhaust gas content. This intelligent injection of gasoline fuel accomplishes auto-ignition of gasoline fuel within the exhaust gas content over extended range of engine speed and load.

Controlled auto-ignition lean burn stratified engine by intelligent injection

An enhanced auto-ignition in a gasoline internal combustion engine, comprises a fuel injector directly communicating with said combustion chamber for spraying gasoline fuel. The fuel injector sprays a first injection quantity of gasoline fuel into a combustion chamber at first fuel injection timing, which falls in a range from the intake stroke to the first half of the compression stroke, thereby to form air/fuel mixture cloud that becomes a body of mixture as the engine piston moves from the first fuel injection timing toward a top dead center position of the compression stroke, and the fuel injector sprays a second injection quantity of gasoline fuel into the body of mixture at second fuel injection timing, which falls in the second half of the compression stroke, forming mixture cloud that is superimposed on a portion of said body of mixture, thereby to establish the cylinder content wherein the density of fuel particles within the superimposed portion is high enough to burn by auto-ignition at an ignition point in the neighborhood of the piston top dead center position of the compression stroke, causing temperature rise and pressure, which initiate auto-ignition of the fuel particles within the remaining portion of said body of mixture.

Auto-ignition combustion management in internal combustion engine

A compression self-ignition gasoline engine includes a stratifying device stratifying gas in a combustion chamber of the engine, a fuel injector directly injecting fuel in the combustion chamber and a controller connected to the stratifying device and the fuel injector. The controller controlling the stratifying device to produce a high temperature gas layer of a high temperature gas and a low temperature gas layer of a low temperature gas in the combustion chamber. The controller further controls the fuel injector to inject the fuel to both the high temperature gas layer and the low temperature gas layer.

Compression self-ignition gasoline engine

Stroke cycles of a self-igniting gasoline engine (,) comprising an intake stroke, compression stroke, power stroke and exhaust stroke are performed sequentially by a piston (,), and self-ignition of the fuel mixture is performed by compression of the fuel mixture in the compression stroke. The strokes of the piston (,) are detected by a sensor (,), and an electronic control unit (,) controls a valve timing adjustment mechanism (,) so that a sealed period occurs when both an exhaust valve (,) and intake valve (,) are closed in the vicinity of top dead center of the exhaust stroke. The electronic control unit (,) also controls the fuel injection timing of a fuel injector (,) so that fuel is injected into the combustion chamber (,) during the sealed period. The fuel injected into the hot gas in the sealed combustion chamber (,) causes pre-combustion reactions, and thereby modifies the gasoline composition to a more reactive composition containing aldehydes so that compression self-ignition occurs easily.

Compression self-igniting gasoline engine

A fuel injection valve includes a valve body to which liquid to be injected is supplied. A nozzle tip is connected with an end portion of the valve body. A valve member is installed in the valve body to stop and start a supply of the liquid to the nozzle tip. The nozzle tip has first and second nozzle holes which are formed so that fluid injected through the first nozzle hole is collided with fluid injected through the second nozzle hole and that a ratio between a square root of a cross-sectional area of the first nozzle hole and a square root of a cross-sectional area of the second nozzle hole is within a range 1.25 to 3.5. Therefore, the collided fuel is effectively atomized as a result of a resonance phenomenon by the collision.

Fuel injection valve

A fuel injection nozzle for spraying a swirl of fuel, includes a nozzle body having a bore, an orifice communicated with the bore, and a wall defining the bore and the orifice. The bore for receiving an axially movable valve body has a first center axis and the orifice has a second center axis. An inlet open to the bore and an outlet open to outside the nozzle body. The wall includes a first circumferential edge portion defining the inlet of the orifice and a second circumferential edge portion defining the outlet of the orifice. A sprayed fuel body formed by fuel discharged from said orifice, has a third center axis. The first circumferential edge portion is so arranged as to allow the first center axis to be positioned inside the inlet. The second circumferential edge portion is so contoured as to allow at least a portion of the second circumferential edge portion to be out of a plane normal to the second center axis.
