Composition comprising polyarylene sulfide and polyamide composition

A pair of tubular products of polyarylene sulfide having end faces to be welded are welded to each other by heating the end faces by a hot plate in no contact with the end faces to a surface temperature which is at least the melting heat-absorption peak temperature and at most 80.degree. C. above the melting initiation temperature of the polyarylene sulfide, and abutting the end faces under a pressure of 50-1500 kPa when the end faces are at a surface temperature which is at least 10.degree. C. above the melting initiation temperature and not exceeding the melting heat-absorption peak temperature of the polyarylene sulfide. As a result, a welded tubular structure having a weld with a small inside bead but having a sufficiently large weld strength can be obtained with substantially no thermal degradation and at a good operating efficiency.

A heat-resistant stretched film is obtained by stretching a resin composition comprising 100 parts by weight of a poly(arylene sulfide) of a substantially linear structure and 5 to less than 100 parts by weight of a melt-stable poly(arylene thioether-ketone). The poly(arylene sulfide) has a melt viscosity of at least 1,000 poises as measured at 310.degree. C. and a shear rate of 200 sec.sup.-1. Disclosed herein are a polymer alloy prepared by polymerizing 0.1 to 100 parts by weight of at least one radically polymerizable monomer to 100 parts by weight of polyarylene thioether having a repeating unit of ##STR1## as a main constituent and at least a part of said radically polymerizable monomers is polymerized within inner pores of the polyarylene thioether particles and a process for producing the polymer alloy. Disclosed herein is a melt-stable poly(arylene thioether-ketone) prepreg, which comprises in integral combination (A) 20-90 wt. % of a fibrous reinforcing material which comprises long fibers and/or at least one shaped long fiber body, said fibers and/or body being formed of inorganic fibers and/or organic fibers; and (B) 10-80 wt. % of a a thermoplastic matrix material composed principally of a melt-stable poly(arylene thioether-ketone) having predominant recurring units of the formula ##STR1## and having a melting point, Tm of 310.degree.-380.degree. C., a residual melt crystallization enthalpy, .DELTA.Hmc (420.degree. C/10 min) of at least 10 J/g, a melt crystallization temperature, Tmc (420.degree.C./10 min) of at least 210.degree. C. and a reduced viscosity of 0.2-2 dl/g. A melt-stable molded or formed product can also be obtained by shaping the above prepreg or an arrangement or laminate of prepregs of the same type as the above prepreg at 140.degree.-450.degree. C. under stresses.

Disclosed herein is a process for the preparation of a poly(arylene thioether-ketone) improved in melt stability, which comprises subjecting a poly(arylene thioether-ketone) (PTK) to a heat treatment for 5-5.times.10.sup.3 minutes in a powdery state and a temperature range of 200.degree.-350.degree. C. The PTK has predominant recurring units of the formula ##STR1## and has a melting point, Tm of 310.degree.-380.degree. C., a melt crystallization temperature, Tmc (420.degree. The present invention discloses a polyarylene thioether composition prepared by blending a polyarylene thioether and a polyisobutylene as an impact modifier having a compatibility with polyarylene thioether and capable of withstanding a high processing temperature for the polyarylene thioether. The composition can be processed into a molded product excellent in toughness and impact resistance.
