A highly adsorbent, temperature-resistant monolithic activated carbon article is obtained by forming an aqueous emulsion of a polymeric binder, combining the resulting aqueous emulsion with wet, activated carbon particles to produce a slip mixture, forming the obtained slip mixture into a shaped article, and thereafter curing the shaped article.

A highly adsorbent, temperature-resistant monolithic activated carbon article is obtained by forming an aqueous emulsion of a silsesquioxane binder, combining the resulting aqueous emulsion with wet or dry, relatively high surface area (&gt;2000 m.sup.2 /g) carbon particles to produce a slip mixture, forming the obtained slip mixture into a shaped structure, and thereafter curing the shaped structure.

Monolithic carbonaceous article

A granulated activated carbon is produced by spherically agglomerating activated carbon powder in an aqueous slurry in the presence of a bridging liquid and a binder. At least about 50% of the carbon powder has a surface area of from about 2800 to about 3500 m.sup.2 /gm, an iodine number of from about 2500 to about 3500 mg/gm, a total pore volume of from about 1.0 to about 2.8 cc/gm, and a bulk density of from about 0.27 to about 0.32 gm/cc. The granules are activated by treatment with steam to provide granules having particle diameters of from about 0.17 to about 0.71 mm, and pore size distribution and adsorptive capacity essentially unchanged from that of the carbon powder. The granules are particularly effective for the treatment of drinking water to reduce the level of undesirable contaminants.

Granulated activated carbon for water treatment

A method is disclosed for recovering liquids and gases by a rapid hydropyrolysis of carbonaceous solids which comprises subjecting the carbonaceous material in a stream of carrier gas to a first pressure and a first temperature below the decomposition temperature of the carbonaceous material; reducing substantially in a single step the pressure on the stream of carbonaceous material from the first pressure to a second pressure, the ratio of the first pressure to the second pressure being at least 1.6, thereby accelerating the carrier gas in the stream of carbonaceous material; permitting the accelerated stream of carbonaceous material to expand as a free jet and mixing hot gas with the accelerated and expanded stream of carbonaceous material to raise the temperature of the carbonaceous material by heat exchange with the hot gas, to a second temperature of at least the aforesaid decomposition temperature, thereby initiating decomposition of the carbonaceous material; and reducing the temperature of the reaction mixture to below said decomposition temperature, with the total time for heating the carbonaceous material from the first temperature to the second temperature, decomposing the carbonaceous material and cooling the reaction mixture to below said decomposition temperature being from about 1 millisecond to about 10 seconds.

Rapid hydropyrolysis of carbonaceous solids

A method for hydroconversion of coal solids in a solvent by contact with molecular hydrogen and catalyst solids in a reactor. The catalyst solids are catalytically active substances including promoted or unpromoted molybdenum on an alumina support material. The support is characterized by bimodal pore distribution with the average diameter of the smaller pores ranging from about 100-200 angstroms and preferably 120-140 angstroms, and average diameter of the larger pores being in excess of 1,000 angstroms.
