The present invention provides a composition containing an extract fromor a derivative thereof,-andor a derivative thereof (optionally further containingor), which has a superior antiviral activity, a superior peripheral blood flow-improving activity and a superior hair growth-stimulating activity, and a production method thereof.

Composition having physiological activity and production method thereof

This invention relates to methods for producing optically active hydroxyesters and also to methods for producing and purifying optically active five-membered ring lactones. More specifically, the invention provides methods for efficiently, safely, and selectively producing and purifying optically active (R)-hydroxyester (shown by formula 1) and optically active (S)-hydroxyester (shown by formula 2) in high state of purity at ordinary temperature. The invention also relates to application of the interconvertible optically active (R)-five-membered ring lacton (shown by formula 5). They are intermediates for synthesizing various medicines, agricultural chemicals, and biologically active substances, however especially useful for synthesizing pheromone of a noxious insect, Popillia japonica Newman. ##STR1## (Here, R.sub.1 denotes --C.tbd.C--R.sub.3 or --C.dbd.C--R.sub.3 ; R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 denote straight chain or branched alkyl groups containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms; R.sub.4 denotes alkyl groups, aralkyl groups, or haloalkyl groups containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms and the end group of R.sub.4 may be carboxyl groups; * denotes asymmetricrbon atoms.)

Method of producing optically active hydroxyesters

An enzyme immobilized membrane comprising an anisotropic ultrafiltration membrane having a porous layer and a dense layer, and an enzyme immobilized therein is disclosed. The porous layer of the ultrafiltration membrane retains a water-soluble polymer having at least two functional groups in the crosslinked state, and the enzyme is covalently bonded to the membrane through the functional groups of the polymer. Preferably, the membrane is prepared from polysulfone. The enzyme immobilized membrane is produced by a process which comprises impregnating a solution of the water-soluble polymer into the porous layer of the ultrafiltration membrane under a pressure of 0.1 to 1.0 kg/cm.sup.2, washing the porous layer, passing a solution of a crosslinking agent through the porous layer under a pressure within the same pressure range as above to crosslink the water-soluble polymer, removing the non-crosslinked water-soluble polymer by back washing from the dense layer of the membrane, and then passing a solution of the enzyme under a pressure within the same pressure range as above through the porous layer, whereby the enzyme is covalently bonded to the membrane through the functional groups of the polymer.
